Digital Design 1 & 2 –
Digital Designers were very busy this week even with three members of our team gone to SkillsUSA state competition.

We attended the Career Fair, which gave the students the opportunity to design and prepare the layouts for business cards, called an “imposition”. These would be commercial print-ready.

On Friday, students participated in a marketing activity to prepare all the materials for a women’s conference (60 attendees). We made, place cards (for a formal dinner on Friday night), button name badges, including rhinestone “bling”, wire-bound booklets with vinyl letters and rhinestones applied to the handmade covers, handmade “chalk art” name badges for special instructors, and “TaDa” button-magnets for departing gifts, all packaged in individual bags. The learning experience was getting it all done under a tight deadline, and applying “assembly lines” wherever possible. It was a great learning experience although exhausting!

Business Management & Administration
Accounting Operations and Administrative Office Specialist –
The entire month of April has been a busy and exciting one for our students. From planning and running the professional business packages and the bake sale projects, as fundraisers for SkillsUSA, to developing and preparing the program and participating in the Partners for Success programs we have been extremely busy. We also continued to support the United Way’s VITA program as well as made an outstanding PEEPS display. Plus, we continued completing OCP’s, as well as have practice interviews and customer services demonstrations. It has truly been a month to remember.

One activity that the entire college community will long remember is our celebration of Administrative Office Professional Day! The planning for this day began months ago with Kasey Steele and Jessica Pantoja taking the lead. The entire committee included Suzanne Auritt, Dominique Hutto, Antonio Loredo and Lisa Creamer. They began by asking how they would like to be honored when they are working as an Office Professional. During these discussions our 2014 Administrative Office Professional Day became a reality! Enjoy some of the pictures of this event.

The big news that had everyone’s appetite on edge was who won the cakes at our SkillsUSA Bake sale. The winners were Anayeli Maya of the nursing program and Jessica Pantoja of the AOS program. They are shown receiving the cakes!

Another major effort has us working on two fronts. It was the first Partners for Success event, which was held at Lake Sumter State College. We not only put together a table of information, but members of our class developed the program for the event. In the picture below, you see program developers Jessica Pantoja and Kasey Steele with Ms. Nancy Muenzmay, Director of the Lake County Business Opportunity Centers and organizer of the Partners for Success. We also had several members of our class participate in the event by staffing our both. These students included Zana Dudley, Suzanne Auritt, Samantha Combee, Brinda Ruehlen and Kasey Steele.

Also, we continued to send students to the United Way’s VITA program at the Goodwill location in Leesburg. These students have been making it easier for the residents to complete their income taxes. It is a major commitment of time and energy, but our students rose to the challenge. They included Kamia Manning, Ms. Mariah Delgado from the United Way, Carolyn Shiflett, Cherry Doty, Brinda Ruehlen, Joey Williams, Brandon Goff, Cortney Donaldson and Marlene Satten.

All of this was accomplished because of a great team effort!!

Health Science
Patient Care Technician –
The Patient Care Tech students get stressed!! This past Wednesday, the PCT students participated in a mock cardiac stress test so they could learn their role in this diagnostic test. Each student in the class had a role to play from patient and caregiver to PCT and physician. It was very informative and fun. They really learned how the process works.

Hospitality & Tourism
Commercial Foods & Culinary Arts – Culinary
student Baby Capule and her sister entered the Great American Pie Baking Contest in Celebration, Florida, and won First Place. Way to go Baby! The pie looks very delicious and those who had a chance to taste it were very lucky!

On April 25, Ed Klaczak from SCORE (a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground) made a presentation to the Culinary students about “How to Start a Business.” They also had a chance to discuss the importance of networking.

Law and Public Safety
Law Enforcement and Corrections –
Last weekend was the Leesburg BikeFest and we want to personally thank all of our students worked the event. We received many praises on the level of professionalism our students brought to the event. We have already received our invitation for next year’s event. Thank you again to the EMS, Law, and Corrections students; all of you represented our school with great pride and it showed.

Night Law recruits were instructed on the Taser last Saturday and all of them were shocked about the whole experience. Day Law recruits are continuing with their CSI block and Correction recruits are continuing their Supervision block of instruction.

Fire Fighting – The next PT Challenge between the Fire Fighter students and the Law Enforcement students will be held on May 5 at 11 am! Everyone is invited. Who is going to win this year?

A big thank you to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for the donation of a forklift, which will be used by the Fire Academy for the Structural Collapse classes!

The schedule for the remaining Class D Private Security Guard classes is:

May 12 – 23, 6 – 10 pm
June 16 – 26, 6-10 pm

All of the classes are held at Lake Tech’s Institute of Public Safety Campus in Tavares.

Manufacturing
Center for Advanced Manufacturing –
Architect John Dickerson has been retained to design the new Center for Advanced Manufacturing. A survey of the property has been conducted and the portables that belonged to Lifestreams’ Lake Academy are being removed.

Welding Technology – Kudos to Welding instructor John Dahler who assisted the students at Withlacoochee Tech in Inverness with their welding certifications. The instructor at Withlacoochee suffered an emergency medical issue and the students were without an instructor. So, Mr. Dahler spent two days on their campus guiding the students and certifying their welds so the students would be ready for employment.

Transportation & Logistics
Automotive Collision Repair & Refinishing –
All students who applied for the Collision Foundation tool grant, received a uniform shirt and safety glasses. Lake Tech had one winner – Richard Stanley who received the tool grant.

The Auto Collision students participated in the Partners for Success event at Lake Sumter State College. We had a great turnout with all of the students in their Collision uniforms.

On Saturday, the Auto Collision students worked with the Welding students for the 1st Annual Car Show. Over $400 was raised for SkillsUSA competition.

Automotive Service Technology – The Automotive Service Technology students had a great week. We welcomed a new student this week, a couple of our engine repair students had their engines back in the cars that they came out of and got them running. Also our new students had fun learning about car inspections and all that involves doing a multipoint inspection and what to look for when performing one on a vehicle.

Adult Education
GED Prep –
For the past several weeks, we have been alternating lessons on Science and Social Studies GED topics. We have put them into the Schoology learning management system so students can use them in class and access them at home. Through these topics we have lessons in reading, math, and language and focus on the big concepts of science and social studies. The students really like them and it is quite interactive with videos, interactive learning lessons, writing lessons, and quizzes.

This week our science lesson was Genetics; we discussed heredity and how traits are passed from parent to child, along with cells, DNA, chromosomes, and other terms. Today we concluded with an experiment and extracted DNA from strawberries! It was very cool, the students loved it. Some of the students in the Medical Assisting program came to join us and brought a microscope and we were able to see the DNA. Thanks MA students and Mrs. T. !

The new GED test uses higher level thinking skills and students need to study differently for it. We have had some successful students though and some have passed the new GED since January. With new materials still coming in, we are adjusting to them and the materials. Have you done a quadratic equation lately?

Legislative

While we are very disappointed that the technical center bill did not make it through the Senate, the Florida Legislature passed a measure to address the residency issues for Adult Education programs in Florida. The language in the bill relieves the in-state/out-of-state tuition issues which have been attributed to the decline in enrollment in our programs. This was very good news!

In the Community

Lake Tech was well-represented at the Partners for Success event held at Lake Sumter State College. Our faculty and students presented their programs to members of the business community. It was a great event!
