Automotive School FAQ’s

How long is auto mechanic school?

The Automotive school at Lake Tech takes approximately 35 weeks to complete for the Automotive Service 1 program. If you choose to continue to the Automotive Service 2 program, you will study for an additional 7 months (25 weeks).

Most mechanic schools take 6 months to one year for a certificate, whereas an associate’s degree in Automotive Service will require two years of school. Through an agreement with Lake Sumter State College, 24 credit hours from the Automotive Service Technology program at Lake Technical College can be transferred toward the Industrial Management Technology A.S. degree.

What is the best school for auto mechanics?

Based on the quality of instruction, the best school in Central Florida for auto mechanics is Lake Technical College. At Lake Tech, we invest in every student’s development as an automotive service professional to ensure they are ready to meet and exceed industry standards and excel in their careers. Learn more about Lake Tech and the Automotive Service Technology I Program and Automotive Service Technology II.

How do I get auto mechanic certification?

The auto mechanic certification sought after industry-wide is ASE certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. To get certified, you must A) successfully pass the ASE exam for your field and B) either demonstrate two years of work experience or completion of an auto mechanic trade school program with equivalent experience plus some additional work experience hours. You can complete the ASE exam prior to achieving the experience requirement, but you will not be ASE certified yet. Once you can prove your hours of experience, you will receive your ASE auto mechanic certification, which you must renew every 5 years.

How do I become an auto mechanic with no experience?

While there are no certification or licensure requirements in Florida to begin working as an auto mechanic, it will be difficult to break into the industry without completing a basic automotive service technology trade school program. Employers want to see that you have obtained your GED® or high school degree and have at least some experience before they bring you into their shop or dealership. You may be able to find job placement without trade school training, but beware of unscrupulous employers who hire candidates with no training in order to evade their employer responsibilities. Earning your automotive school degree will allow you to compete with other skilled technicians for better paying jobs.

What qualifications do you need to be a mechanic?

A high school diploma or GED® is required to work as a mechanic in most auto mechanic shops. Many employers also require some form of mechanic trade school training or equivalent work experience. Certain shops also require ASE Certification, which is included in the course of study at Lake Technical College.
