What is culinary arts?

Culinary arts is the discipline of food preparation, cooking and presentation. It includes everything from selecting the ingredients, proper chopping, browning and basting techniques, to creating stunning visuals when plating and displaying food. The culinary arts broadly includes pastry arts as well as restaurant management.

How long is culinary school?

The length of culinary school can vary from a few months to a few years. The standard length of culinary school in the U.S. is 6 to 12 months. At Lake Technical College, the Professional Culinary Arts & Hospitality program is 1,200 hours, or approximately 40 weeks.

Is culinary school worth it?

Yes, culinary school will increase your earning potential over the lifetime of your career in the restaurant and hospitality industry. It provides a foundation of culinary knowledge that will allow you to advance rapidly in your career. The most common argument against culinary school is the cost, but finding an affordable culinary program such as the Culinary Arts program at Lake Tech leaves you with only benefits from starting your chef career in culinary school.

What do you learn in culinary school?

In culinary school, you learn basic and advanced culinary skills and kitchen and restaurant management. At Lake Tech, you’ll master hands-on techniques in all of the following areas: breads, pastries, soups, sauces, salads, entrees, garde manger, ice carvings, & show pieces. When you graduate, you’ll be ready to begin a career at any high-end restaurant, and you’ll be able to cook from a recipe or create your own.

How much does culinary school cost?

The culinary program at Lake Tech is just a fraction of the cost of other programs: approximately $4,800. Other culinary schools currently range from $30,000 to $125,000. Additionally, Valencia College grants fifteen hours of college credit towards the Culinary Management Program for graduates of Lake Tech’s Professional Culinary Arts and Hospitality program. Train with industry experts, and prepare yourself to start your culinary career at a cost you can afford.
