It was an exciting week for the Digital Design students who started the new program August 22. Having completed OCP A, they are finally able to start learning the much anticipated, highly pixilated, super calibrated ADOBE PHOTOSHOP. It’s like they have officially made it into the gates of digital design heaven–even in Chapter 1 of their textbooks. It’s an awesome thing to see such enthusiasm for merely “opening” a software program and inserting an image! It could be total mayhem when they can actually design stuff with it! Stay tuned…

The Design Studio “DDS&J” (Digital Design Students & Johnson) was selected as the official agency to prepare printed materials for Dr. L. Tech of Mountain View Clinic, located in A Building. If you didn’t know we have a “real” doctor’s office right here on campus, visit Beth Thornton and her new Medical Assisting program beginning this month. We’re honored to have been selected from all the competition!

Human Services

The freshmen students in Cosmetology have now completed their first 195 hours, and are taking clients for manicure, pedicure and facial services. They are also working on group projects to “train the trainer”. Next week they will be doing presentations on the different theory components of manicuring and pedicuring, and “teaching” the instructors and other students. Our senior students have been reaching completion over the past several weeks. Two students took their state board exams last month, and they both passed! In fact, for one of them it only took 45 minutes, pretty impressive for a two-part, 150-question exam! So far this year we are proud to say we are maintaining our 100% State Board passing rate.

Auto Collision instructors and students attended the International Autobody Congress & Expo, http://www.naceexpo.com/, in Orlando last Thursday. This is the world’s collision repair event designed and created for the collision repair industry professional. It was a great educational experience for the students and we received many compliments on how great our students looked and acted! Several students planned to return on Saturday to continue learning. We were proud as punch!

Adult Education

Congratulations to the Adult Education students! Thirty Literacy Completion Point (LCP) certificates went out this week for students who have TABE post-tested and received gains. Chick-Fil-A was at it again, rewarding their efforts with a chicken sandwich on the house. If you visit a Chick-Fil-A in Lake County remember to tell them “Thank you for supporting Lake Tech’s Adult Education students”.

We are currently implementing an instructional software program that is allowing us to offer computer-based remediation in-and-out of class for many of our 192 students enrolled at off-site locations throughout Lake County. We believe this “in-and-out” of class approach to instruction will intensify the remediation we can provide and result in more student gains throughout our program.

12 by 12?? Did you know that Lake Tech has a GED class at Four Corners, which is 12 miles from Disney World, and also a class on Lake Mack Road, which is 12 miles from downtown Deland? That’s a distance of over 70 miles and 1-1/2 hours of driving in no traffic! Lake Tech’s Adult Education program is truly reaching out to all those in need of our services in Lake County. Get the word out, so we can make sure those classes are filled to the brim. You can find a class schedule by clicking hereopens in a new window.

Monday, October 3rd College Night at LSCC: Art and Trudy worked the event that was well attended by students from elementary to high school. There seemed to be an increased awareness of what Lake Tech offers, as well as a lot of interest in dual enrollment. A lot of students who approached our table said, “This is what I’m interested in!” The attendance was up over last year according to one LSCC official. The evening was interrupted by a fire alarm set off by a popcorn maker! You should see how fast Art can disconnect a computer and evacuate a building!

Thursday, October 6th, Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo: Trudy and three of Sonya Rosenglick’s Accounting/Administrative Assistant students worked the event. This was a great opportunity to get our name out to the business community. A lot of people who attended the event were interested in our programs for a family member or themselves. It was also a great chance to promote placement and internship opportunities. A lot of businesses were encouraged to become a proud partner on our Website. One of Sonya’s students was able to apply for a bank teller’s position with Wells Fargo.

Our admissions team will start visiting the high schools over the next few months. They will have a display in each of the cafeterias to promote our programs!

Do you, or your students, have a creative idea to market our programs? Please give Trudy Dailey your ideas since it is time to begin preparing for our spring term marketing drive.

We have 465 FaceBook Fans! Let’s try to reach 500 by Thanksgiving. Remind your students, business partners, family, friends, and relatives to “Like” Lake Technical Center! Each Monday, check out the MMT (Monday Morning Trivia) contest and see if you can guess the answer!

Staff Development Opportunities

Four Lake Tech educators will attend the 2011 National Career Pathways Network (NCPN) Conferenceopens in a new window, October 13-14 at the Marriott World Center in Orlando. The conference theme, Transforming Lives for a Strong America, reflects the increasing emphasis on the need to create opportunities for student academic and career success, thereby increasing both personal and corporate economic successes in the U.S. “Career Pathways can play a key role in the restructuring of American education and the return of a thriving economy if we remain focused on the goal of helping all who want to succeed in life,” says Dr. David Bond, NCPN Director.

NCPN’s twentieth anniversary national conference will feature over 130 concurrent sessions divided among several programmatic strands including: Instructional Innovations, Focusing Students, Curriculum Design and Instruction, Adult Education Career Pathways, College and Career Readiness, and Engaging Business. The conference is designed for high school and college administrators and faculty as well as business partners involved in Career Pathways partnerships across the country. We look forward to hearing all about Career Pathways when they return.

It’s been a busy week in Digital Design! On Tuesday, Bryan Burch, owner of Digital Design House, located in Umatilla, spent an afternoon with our students. He inspired us all with his amazing career journey and we look forward to more contact with him. On Wednesday, instructor Kerrie Johnson and nearly the entire class attended the InDesign User Group conference in Winter Park where we learned about new technology to convert print magazines to be viewable in eReaders.

New students will begin working in Adobe software next week and then work on creating designs for the SkillsUSA Florida t-shirts and lapel pins. If we win, those shirts and pins, designed by Lake Tech students, could travel all the way to nationals and be traded with students from all over the world by Florida SkillsUSA contestants! Tuesday afternoon we will enhance our “social skills” in a 50th birthday party in the classroom – not mentioning any names…

Business Administration & Management

Accounting and Administrative Assistant instructor Sonya Rosenglick had a birthday this week and her students surprised her with a party during lunch. They decorated the room, ordered pizza and a cake, and shared how much they love and appreciate her. Even some former students attended! Happy Birthday Sonya!

Health Science

Thursday evening the students in the full time evening Practical Nursing class played hosts to some local Girl Scouts (Troop # 4715 & 4722) to help them earn their medical badge. The girls and their troop leaders (Cindy Lancaster and Melinda Redd) along with Wendy Henderson who is a nurse and volunteered her time to assist them with this badge, spent time in the classroom and learning lab becoming familiar with some of the equipment nurses use in their job. In addition, they listened to some interesting lecture by Jean Becraft about problems with the heart. The girls were each given a special gift assembled by Lana Taylor and Jean Becraft that included a Lake Tech pad of paper, pencil, and an “expect the unexpected” bracelet. We wish them all the best and hope to see them in the same seats as students in the future!

The Day Law Recruits completed the Firearms block of training last week and also experienced the Taser Electronic Control Device on Tuesday. It was said to have been a “very shocking experience.” The Night Law Recruits have finished their first full week of class and take the Introduction to Law Enforcement Exam this evening.

Transportation and Logistics

Auto Collision instructors Joe Indomenico and David Beliveau reported that uniforms have been donated to the students so they will be ready to shine as they attend the International Auto Body Congress & Expo, http://www.naceexpo.com/, in Orlando on Thursday. This is the world’s collision repair event designed and created for the collision repair industry professional. We are excited that our students are able to attend. In addition, David Beliveau and Diane Culpepper will be participating in a press conference with the Collision Repair Foundation and a video interview with Fender Bender about the mini-makeover Lake Tech has received!

Adult Education

Eleven instructors, accompanied by Assistant Director and ACE board member Jack Miller, attended the Adult and Community Educator’s (ACE) of Florida conference this week in Orlando. It was a great time of learning and team building. Throughout the state there was concern about the impact tuition and residency requirements have had on Adult Education. Some districts are predicting educating 10,000 fewer students this year. Despite the difficult times, coming together and sharing was an important morale booster.

One nugget they all walked away with from the conference was the importance of advocacy. Did you know that we served our adult education students last year at a cost of just over $500 per student? It is obvious that Adult Education is a cost effective way of “getting Lake County to work”. By improving the basic and 21st century skills of those in Lake County, helping adults obtain a high school credential and assisting their transition process to postsecondary, especially to one of Lake Tech’s 26 certification programs, Adult Education is the right investment in the economic turnaround our county, state, and country needs.

Regarding the implementation of the Career Pathways initiative, teams have been formed to analyze our current intake, retention, and transition processes in adult education to prescribe mechanisms and processes to automate and improve our current system. The result will be higher levels of accountability and greater transition rates of Adult Education students into career education and employment opportunities. Teams have also been formed to develop our new database, develop contextualized curriculum, and collaborate on our dissemination efforts. You may find one of them in one of YOUR career and technical programs, getting video footage for the new Career Pathways orientation video. This means more students in our programs, so please help us make it a dynamic experience. Brent Stubbs or Trudy Dailey will contact the career technical program before the visit.

Marketing

Trudy Dailey and Art Seidner will have an exhibit at the annual College Night to be held at LSCC Monday evening. They expect to answer a lot of questions about our classes.

Next Thursday, October 6th, Trudy will have a booth at the Leesburg Chamber Business Expo from 2 to 6 pm. Please encourage your students to attend this event since it is a good networking opportunity. Five students from the Accounting and Administrative Assistant programs have volunteered to work the registration table and help Trudy.

The ACE of Florida organization is launching The Second Chance Initiative…Willing Workers for Florida’s Business. Stay tuned to learn more about this exciting marketing campaign.

Adult Education

Over 390 students are currently enrolled in Adult Education throughout the county. Particularly, in the GED prep classes this number is solid year-over-year. However, on Thursday we met with our advisory committee to discuss some of the new challenges we are facing in Adult Education, in particular ESOL, as it pertains to the new legislative requirements. The entire committee expressed their support of Adult Education and will consider ways that they could help off-set these new barriers to obtaining language acquisition.

Next week, 12 of the faculty, accompanied by Assistant Director Jack Miller, will be attending the 2011 ACE (Adult and Community Educators) of Florida Conference. The instructors are excited about the opportunity to meet with other practitioners, get timely professional development, and foster community amongst themselves. In addition, Brent Stubbs, Department Chair, will be presenting ““Web 2.0 for Adult Ed-Career Pathways Style” which will focus on empowering adult educators with the tools they need to both make their classrooms engaging and empower their students with the relevant tools they need to be competitive in the 21st century.

Last Friday marked the beginning of our Job Search DVD series. We begin with How to Search For a Job, then to Resumes, Networking, Interviews, Negotiating, and, finally, How to Keep a Job. Every Friday we view a different DVD; an assignment is attached to each one. By the end of the series, students will have a resume, letter of application, target companies, list of answers to potential interview questions, and more insight into getting their dream job. One of my favorite assignments is the verbal commercial. Students are required to create a 60-second verbal commercial that they use as an introduction to the dreaded, “Tell me about yourself” question. This verbal commercial also serves as their summary statement on the resume. We no longer use the objective statement, which seem to all sound the same.

We will be using Edmodo along with the DVD series. Questions from the DVD will be posted on Edmodo and students are required to answer them. Fun, fun, fun with technology.

There was tremendous interest in our programs and many people completed the online application. Potential students were interested in Medical Assisting as well as other health care programs, Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts, Digital Design, Cosmetology, Welding, etc. Watch for interest cards early next week so we can call the potential students. Upcoming events include College Night, October 3 to be held at LSCC, and the Leesburg Chamber Business Expo to be held October 6 from 2 pm to 6 pm. Please tell your students about this great networking opportunity.

Lake Tech’s Fire Academy will be offering pre-employment testing for the 15 projected fire fighter openings in Mt. Dora, Tavares, Mascotte, the Villages, and Clermont during the 2012 year. The written test ($25) will be administered on October 12 and the physical agility test ($75) will be administered on October 22 or 23.  The scores will be given to the participating departments for consideration when they hire new fire fighters. The test scores are good for one year.

Last Saturday night the Day Law recruits assisted the Tavares Police Department with their D.U.I. checkpoint. They all did a great job and were able to see some of what they learned in a real world, practical setting. They did an outstanding job of representing the Institute of Public Safety and Lake Tech as a whole.

Adult Education

The AAAE Lab is bustling!  We have lots of students working hard to attain their GED and/or their needed score for a CTE program.  One student got his needed score and is now in Auto Collision, two more are set to start in their program in a week.  Two students went from ABE to GED level, and we had one student go from 4.5E level to 12.8D level in math.  The walkover students are working hard as well, and hopefully will soon be in their programs full-time.

On Saturday all of the part time adult education instructors attended a morning of training. It was a great time of sharing and preparing for a new and exciting year. Next week is the launch of our many off-site locations offered throughout the county. ESOL locations include: Leesburg Elementary, The Villages Elementary, Cagan Crossing Community Library and Cooper Memorial Library. GED locations include: South Lake High School, Cagan Crossing Library, the Genesis Center in Leesburg, and the Lady Lake Library.

This week is also National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. Several events are planned, including a special presentation by Ms. Erika Greene, Literacy Coordinator with the Lake County Library Services Division. Ms. Greene will speak to the GED and ABE students at 10 am, September 15 in the Applied Adult Academic Education (AAAE) classroom. Mr. Thomas Breck, Executive Director of the Golden Triangle YMCA, has donated free day passes to the YMCA for Adult Education students on the main campus in a show of support for adult and family literacy in the Golden Triangle area. If you patronize the YMCA, say “thank you” for supporting Lake Tech and Adult Education.

Technology

Free Technology for Teachers is written by Richard Byrne. On his site, he has compiled a list he calls “10 Places to Make and Find Flashcards Online.” Just a couple I thought you might be able to share with your students.  Both have smart phone apps. If you want the entire list, check out his site at freetech4teachers.com.

1.        Cramberry allows users to share flashcards with other users. After creating your flashcards you can contribute to a public gallery of flashcards. If you don’t have time to make flashcards of your own, you can search for and study flashcards in the public gallery. To use the flashcards you will need to create a Cramberry account. For your students that have smartphones, Cramberry now has an app called Flash-Me.

2.       Cobocards, like other flashcard services, allows you to create customized sets of flashcards. One of the key differences between Cobocards and other flashcard services is that Cobocards provides you with PDF copies of your flashcards that you can print to study offline. Of course, you can also study your flashcards online.

Staff Development Opportunities from the DOE

The Perkins Professional Development Institute (PDI) provides “Mini-grant” opportunities to assist CTE instructors in achieving industry certification.  These mini-grants may be used to receive training and/or testing through public or private providers in the State of Florida that offer training for state-approved industry certification.  This year these mini-grants are available

For a list of state-approved certifications, please visit the Florida Department of Education Website at http://www.fldoe.org/workforce/perkins/perkins_resources.aspopens in a new window where you will find the Technical Skill Attainment Inventories.

The PDI has also expanded its FREE programs for postsecondary CTE teachers.  These programs were previously only available to new postsecondary CTE teachers.

TEACHER TRAININGopens in a new window – This program provides an opportunity to learn the latest techniques to develop, sequence, and manage instructional events and activities to promote student learning.  Focus will be on effective planning and implementation of new instructional strategies, measurement, and documentation of student achievement.  Teachers will receive six hours of credit for each unit completed.  This training is available in both a facilitated training and a non-facilitated e-learning program available 24/7.

Education

Instructor Kathy Roberts has a full group of new apprentices in her Early Childhood Education program. They are working hard and learning what it means to work in a child care center and take care of our most precious little children.

Hospitality and Tourism

The staff and faculty dining room will open on the Wednesday (September 7) after Labor Day.

Then we will be on our normal Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday schedule.  Students are busy creating all kinds of yummy and beautiful creations.

 Human Services

Things are “hair raising” in Cosmetology right now. Between all of our programs we have a total of 80 students. More than half (43 to be exact) of these are new students that are working online on core. They are coming to campus two days a week for mandatory testing. They LOVE the fact that since the first 84 hours are reading and writing, they can do this in the comfort of their home, and take breaks whenever they want! Our returning students have picked up right where they left off and are busy, busy, busy serving clients in the salon. All of our students have created Edmodo accounts and we are using Edmodo for a variety of different activities, which we will share with you in the coming weeks.

 Law, Public Safety & Security

The Day Law Recruits finished Defensive Tactics with a few sore muscles and a much better understanding of Advil. On Friday, they became acquainted with pepper spray and its effects. They were contaminated and learned that with a little determination they can work through it and survive!

Adult Education

In the Adult Education lab things are booming. The morning session is officially “filled” and the room is buzzing with the sound of learning.

Trudy Dailey, Brent Stubbs and a new instructor, Charles Durante, went off-campus to Clermont for off-site adult education registration. Many students were enrolled, a few took the TABE and much was learned about the exciting world of Florida proof-of-residency.

Marketing

We are continuing to advertise on Facebook to promote our low enrollment programs. Ads are currently running for Digital Design, Air Conditioning Helper, Solar Energy, and Medical Assisting. We have found this is an effective way to get our message out to a targeted audience. Also, watch for the Lake Tech ad in the Lake Sentinel on Friday, September 9 that will promote several short-term classes as well as Digital Design, Medical Assisting, and Adult Ed. Please let your graduates know about the Daily Commercial Job Fair, at the Leesburg Community Center, 109 E. Dixie Ave, Venetian Gardens on September 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Representatives from Lake Tech will have a booth and be available to answer questions about our programs to help those out of work individuals learn about the opportunities to re-tool themselves at our Center.

Technology

What is podcasting? Podcasting is a way of easily distributing a series of audio or video files on the Internet. How can you use it in the classroom? It won’t be long now until the podcast studio is ready for use. Many instructors are thinking of ways they can use podcasting to enhance, expand, or energize their lessons for students.

Digital Design is off to a great start! The entire group is engaged, already dressing up (every day) and desiring to be the first class earning their Adobe certification, National Technical Honor Society AND graduation ropes! Instructor Kerrie Johnson has incorporated Edmodo with the week’s first questions, “Who designed the Nike logo, what does the symbol mean, and why would the logo be appropriate for an athletic apparel company?” If you know of anyone who might like to learn how to design marketing materials and websites (and BONUS: learn the meaning of the Nike logo), please send them to Kerrie Johnson.

Business Management & Administration

The Administrative Assistant and Accounting Operations programs have been very busy gearing up for the new school year. One student has already completed her first course in OCP A. Three are working from home using Blackboard.  Instructor Sonya Rosenglick has started using Edmodo for an Interview Question group. The student who answers the potential interview question the best, wins! The students are also excited about using technology and the new flat screen monitor available for classroom presentations.

The High School LPN students set up their brand new lab this week complete with IV poles, mannequins and new linens for hospital beds. They have set up study groups and are very motivated to shine. The class also had a welcome visit from Dr. Moxley, Dr. Culpepper and Mrs. Veremakis.  We thank you all for coming to wish us well and for all your support!

The Evening LPN class welcomed the new Day LPN class with an ice cream party on Friday. What a great way to help the new students feel a part of the program.

Hospitality and Tourism

The Culinary program is pleased to announce that the staff and faculty dining room will open on the Wednesday (September 7)  after Labor Day.  The next week we will be on our normal Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday schedule.

The Day Law Recruits are in their third week of Defensive Tactics and progressing well.

Transportation and Logistics

David Beliveau and Joe Indomenico of Auto Collision have completed this year’s Extreme Makeover grant and it has been signed, sealed and delivered. Thanks to Betty Jones for putting it all together for us.  Although Lake Tech was awarded the 2010 Mini-Makeover grant, we are keeping our fingers crossed that we can win the 2011 Extreme Makeover grant too! As part of the grant, a video was created about the program by Mark Prescott and it is awesome. Watch for it on the monitor in the main lobby.

The new students in the program are finishing up the safety competencies and the beginning chapters in the book. They are anxious to get started in the shop. The senior students are eager to complete the program so they can go to work. What do we need? Your damaged vehicles that need repair! Students are ready to practice their new skills.

Last, the Auto Collision students will be holding a fundraiser to supplement their class account. Stay tuned for details of “the headlight restoration project.”

Adult Education

Adult Education is back in full swing. The GED lab had more students on day one this year than last, and we are very excited about the dynamic trio of Mrs. Balogh, Mrs. Netherton and Mrs. Avelli leading our students to both academic and career success.  Already we have three online students who are ready to take the GED test. All three of the three students have postsecondary plans and are actively pursuing those goals.

For the first time in recent history, Lake Tech will offer off-site registration for the GED and ESOL classes being offered in the community. On August 29, 30, and 31, staff will be available at the Cooper Memorial Library in Clermont during the day. In addition, on August 29, there will be TABE testing available at that location.  On September 7, 8, and 9, Lake Tech staff will be available at the Lady Lake Library. With the cost of gasoline, Lake Tech is trying to do its part by taking these services to the community.

In the ESOL classroom, our favorite song is “Crazy” and our favorite saying is “English is Crazy!” With all the changes in Adult Education this year, we are all a little crazy – but our students are the best and oh, so patient!

Marketing

Lake Tech had a huge response at the job fair held last weekend at Lake Square Mall. We promoted our programs as an opportunity for the job seekers to update their skills or “retool themselves.” A computer was available for potential students to apply online, or fill out the electronic contact form. The program that created a lot of interest was Medical Assisting. Several people who visited the booth were spotted this week on our campus. Lake Tech will be participating in another job fair on September 14.

Technology

All faculty and staff will be using Edmodo this year as we progress through our COE self study. Several instructors have begun using it in their classrooms with students. Edmodo is a free, social learning network for teachers and students. If you are interested in learning more, check out www.edmodo.com or contact DeAnna Thomas.

In addition, instructors are thinking about ways to incorporate Jing into their lessons. Jing is another free tool which allows instructors to take a picture or make a short video of an instructional nugget and share it instantly via the web, email, Twitter, or a blog. It is that simple. If you are interested in learning more, check out http://www.techsmith.com/jing/. If you want some assistance with Jing, please contact Sonya Rosenglick.

In late July, Diane Culpepper and Charter Board member James Spencer met with Representative O’Toole in her Lady Lake office to discuss funding for school year 2012-13. The legislative session begins early this year in Tallahassee.

On Friday, Diane and Charter Board President Mickey Gauldin had the opportunity to meet with leaders from the South Lake Chamber to discuss ways to bring additional Lake Tech classes to South Lake County.

Above and Beyond…

A special thanks to our own Mark Prescott. If you haven’t seen the two large shadow boxes in B-Building housing the beautifully painted car hoods, check them out. Mark built and painted the boxes and they look great. He also built the roofs we will be using for the solar classes. On top of his great building skills, he created and produced a new video for the Auto Collision program. A great big thanks to Mark for going above and beyond as a Lake Tech employee!

June, 2011

A big thank you to Tonyia Burnham for her leadership with the Sunshine Committee for the past two years.

Academic Affairs

Business Management & Administration

The Administrative Assistant and Accounting Operations programs have been very busy with students completing the programs, job shadowing, going on job interviews, and completing OCPs.  Three more students will be graduating by June 23.

Three students, one in the Accounting Operations program and two in the Administrative Assistant program have agreed to be a part of Lake Tech’s first “Extreme Makeover.” These students have expressed a desire to be interview-ready by the time they graduate. The Cosmetology Department has graciously agreed to do the makeovers.  The business students were given a consultation on Wednesday by a team of cosmetology students.  The makeovers will be done on Monday and the media will be on campus to cover it. We are excited about this endeavor, as this will be our first “Extreme Makeover.” Who knows, maybe we will make this an annual event!

Education and Training

Congratulations to Jade Quinones who will be graduating with Highest Honors from the Lake Technical Early Childhood Apprenticeship program in June! Not only has Jade demonstrated outstanding knowledge, work habits and skills while attending Early Childhood Classes and completing On-the-Job Training, but she has also been recognized by the Early Learning Coalition as a high achiever.

Child Care Centers are assessed, primarily through observations, to ensure quality in early childhood education. ITERS, The Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale, is designed to assess programs for children from birth to two and one-half years of age. Following is a note sent to Early Childhood Instructor, Kathy Roberts, from Brenda Lopresto, Director of Imagination Station in Groveland, describing Jade’s outstanding accomplishments.

Jade Quinones just completed her Child Care Apprenticeship Certification (CDA) from Lake Technical Center and is currently a lead teacher at Imagination Station Child Care and Development Center in Groveland. Jade also recently received five awards from the Early Learning Collation of Lake County. We had our assessment done in April 2011 using the Infant and Toddler Rating Scale (ITERS). The scores range from 1-7 with 7 as the highest score you can get. Out of all the Lake County Childcare Centers, Jade received the following recognition:
  • Highest Overall ITERS Assessment Award
  • 1st place in Interaction
  • 1st place in Program Structure
  • 2nd place in Space and Furnishings
  • 2nd place in Personal Care Routines.
Jade is a wonderful and caring Infant Room Teacher and we are extremely happy to have her on our staff.
Brenda Lopresto, Owner/Director

*Jade is now registered for the Director Credential Course offered in the fall at Lake Tech.

Adult Education

With one more week to go, students are working hard to get the last bits of knowledge for the school year.  The instructors have retested many students in the last few weeks and they have made great progress in getting their needed TABE scores.  We are anxiously waiting for the latest GED test results, so we can give more students the good news that they can attend graduation.  It’s been a busy year, but a great one!

The Online Adult Education students continue to come in and post test, get their scores, and progress toward their career goals. Just yesterday, a student came in and scored a 12.9 on the A-Level of the Language test, where previously his score was below 9 on the D level of the test. He was elated and is now in GED prep and is working on Florida Choices to hone his career aspirations.

Brent Stubbs traveled to all the area Chick-Fil-A restaurants to take pictures and spend time with the operators. They will all be recognized at this year’s Adult Ed graduation for their tremendous generosity to our students, and the pictures were for their nomination as for the Business Partner of the Year at the 2011 ACE Conference. The local Chick-Fil-A restaurants display the Lake Tech Proud Partner sticker for all to see!

Adult Education

Signed, sealed and delivered. The 2011-12 ESOL and Adult General Education grants are finished and in the mail. As always, when one project finishes another one begins. Adult Education is now turning its attention to developing a 5-year strategic plan under the guidance of its advisory board for our Career Pathway grant.  The first meeting for this project will take place on June 16, from 2-3:30 pm, in the Adult Ed Office. During this meeting, we will begin to identify the action steps needed to develop our plan as we focus on partnerships, program design, curriculum and instruction, student support services, assessment, professional development, marketing, and accountability for the Lake Tech Career Pathways model.

Two new and exciting things will be happening during this year’s Adult Education graduation. First, the Lake County area Chick-Fil-A’s will be recognized for their support of Adult Education students this year. They donated thousands of dollars in chicken sandwiches, chicken minis, and chicken biscuits in recognition of the learning gains made by our adult education students. Second, we will also be honoring 13 students who will be inducted into our first inaugural class of Adult National Honor Society. For more info on Adult National Honor Society, click hereopens in a new window.

At the Genesis Center, the instructors are trying to test as many students as possible. Overall, the outcome has been very positive. Gloria Balogh had six students achieve much improved TABE scores in the areas in which they tested.  Two students moved up to the 8.4 level, one student received a 9.7, two achieved scores in the 10.5 range, and another a 12.9! YES!! All started at about a 5-7 level. Angela also had much success. One of her students went from a 3.2 to a 9.7 and another one went from an 8.6 to a 12.9!!!  Wow!!

Student Affairs

We have just signed an agreement with Ed2Go which will allow Lake Tech to offer a variety of online, continuing education short courses to our community. These courses are instructor-led and will open us up to another market of students.

Jan Tobias, Director of Student Services for the Lake County School Board, will be on campus Tuesday. She will be meeting with Betty Jones to discuss dual enrollment opportunities for the high school students.

Florida Ready to Work has been a big success this year. Many students from Lake Tech have elected to participate and have earned their credentials. Statewide, over 105,000 credentials have been earned and 650 employers – representing 350,000 employees – have partnered with the program. The legislature has funded the program again next year, and so we will open the opportunity to become credentialed to all of our students. Thanks to Diane Hutchinson for spearheading this program at Lake Tech. We will share more information about it during pre-planning in August.

How many Generation Y students do you have in your classroom? These students were born between 1982 and 2001 and have some very different characteristics than the Baby Boomers and Generation Xers.  The Boomers like to be in charge of their own learning, the Generation Xers prefer to work independently, and Generation Y learns best by interacting with their fellow students.

Generation Y students:

  • Want to know everything up front as far as what is expected. They want to know what criteria will be used to evaluate their performance and they will be the most likely to ask the question, “Will this be on the test?”
  • Certainty and security are key for this group. Tie their learning outcomes to economic objectives. This is important to them.
  • Are as comfortable with technology as a fish is with water. A classroom that does not incorporate it will not meet students’ needs for variety, stimulation, and access to information. Some classrooms still require students to study and learn in ways that, to them, are completely different from the ways they operate in every other aspect of their daily lives.
  • Want to be creative. This is a generation that thinks in many dimensions at once. Provide opportunities for them to be creative in how they approach and fulfill requirements. Music, art, and games are good teaching tools.
  • Like focus time. The Generations Y attention span declines after 15-20 minutes. You have your student’s brain for only 20 minutes at a time. Break up the class time into 20-30 minute segments with some kind of activity (outbursts, e.g.).

We have 339 People who “Like Us” on FACEBOOK. Our goal is 400 before this school year is over.

Keep spreading the word – tell your friends to like Lake Tech!!!

Arts, AV Technology, and Communication

On Monday, the Commercial Art students proofed and printed projects to spend all day Tuesday at Leesburg High School presenting our school and program to three periods of Digital Design classes. Hopefully, we reached a few potential students who might be interested in pursuing a career in graphic design. Either way, our Lake Tech Commercial Art students represented us all very well. They dressed up, sat up and each one told why they chose this field and why they chose Lake Tech for their education. Additionally, they each presented a different project with its strategy and difficulties.

Tuesday, Instructor Kerrie Johnson hosted a get-together to meet all the Digital Design teachers in the district. Only two instructors attended, but Kerrie was able to meet Billye Kozlowski (MDHS) and Carol Spikes (EHS) and begin, hopefully, what will be a beneficial relationship between Lake Tech and the high school programs.

Things are hopping in Cosmetology!! We have 63 students enrolled in the Human Services Cluster right now. 18 of those students are completing the program in the next three weeks and are preparing to take their state board examination. Most of them are already working in salons as assistants and are getting very excited about starting their career. Another 17 of those students will be completing within the first 4 weeks that we are back in the fall, so we are spending our days in State Board PREPARATION! Our salon is open through Friday, June 17th. If you, or someone you know, are in need of any salon services before the summer make sure to give us a call or stop by!

The VPI class is dwindling down to a few – but that’s a good thing!  This means that more of the CTE students got their needed TABE scores and will be back in CTE classes.  More of our GED students took their GED test last week so they will be able to get their scores back in time for graduation.  With four weeks to go, the instructors are giving practice test after practice test, so the students can retake the TABE before the end of the year. Mrs. Avelli and Mrs. Netherton are exhausted, but excited that the students will have their scores!

Trudy Dailey’s GED classroom is gearing up for the end of the year. Several students are taking the GED exam in the next month and many are taking the TABE to measure their learning gains. One student moved to GED level this week and several students experienced huge learning gains. The flooding of the Mississippi River created the opportunity to study geography, do mathematical conversions, and discuss the economic impact of the flood. Did you know that 31 states feed into theMississippi River?

Good news here at the Genesis Center. We enrolled three new students and two former students re-enrolled. Also, several students we tested last week achieved outstanding results on their TABE tests. One of Mrs. Reese’s students moved from a 2.8 to a 10.7!! Two of Mrs. Balogh’s students, who were at about a level 7, moved to 12.9!! Hooray!!!

Marketing

We’re in the process of forming a plan to promote the fall term. The next schedule will be going to press shortly and will have a totally different look. If you have any ideas of something you think will create interest in our Center, please talk to Trudy Dailey.

Student Affairs

Betty Jones and the Admissions Team are working on ways to improve communication with the high schools. At a recent high school principals’ meeting, Diane Culpepper introduced Betty Jones as the Dean of Enrollment Management for Lake Tech and discussed with them the dual enrollment opportunities offered here.  Over the last two weeks, Betty has had the opportunity to speak to several of the counselors about the new scholarships we’re offering to graduating seniors, and she has appointments scheduled during June to visit each high school and meet with the counselor teams. Also, the district’s new Director of Student Services (who works directly with all counselors) will be coming to LakeTech in early June to talk about dual enrollment options and other ideas we have for marketing our programs in the high schools.

Yvonne Pruett and Bill Hermann have been out and about proctoring the GED exam. On Friday, they were at the Lake County Jail testing the women inmates.

Forty students were inducted Friday, May 20th into the National Technical Honor Society.  Our inductees represent the following programs: Accounting Operations, Administrative Assistant, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Law Enforcement, Massage Therapy, and Nursing.
