Professional Skills

The mission of Lake Technical College includes providing the necessary skills for students to be successful employees in their chosen careers. Our advisory members, made up of employers in our community, have reviewed and approved these professional skills that they believe are important to your success.

We know that to be successful in the world of work, graduates must possess both strong occupational skills and good professional skills. Lake Tech is committed to incorporating these good professional skills into every facet of the student’s education. The following are ten areas of professional skills’ traits and performance standards that all students are expected to exhibit in classrooms and laboratories.

AttendanceAttends class, arrives/leaves on time; notifies instructor in advance of absences, be prepared for class by reading assignments and completing homework, contribute to class discussion and involvement in lab activities (in other words, no sleeping or daydreaming), begin and end work as expected, use work time appropriately.
CharacterDisplays loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness, dependability, reliability, initiative, self-discipline, and self-responsibility; displays a high level of effort and commitment to performing and completing work.
TeamworkRespects the rights of others; respects confidentiality; is a team worker; is cooperative; is assertive; displays a customer service attitude; seeks opportunities for continuous learning; demonstrates mannerly behavior; encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust, and group identity; fosters commitment and team spirit.
AppearanceDisplays appropriate dress, grooming, hygiene, and etiquette; wears clothing suitable to the job, task and environment; wears full regulation uniform, if required by program.
AttitudeDisplays a willingness to cooperate and accept constructive criticism; sets realistic expectations; approaches assignments with interest.
ProductivityFollows safety practices; conserves and maintains equipment and supplies; keeps work area neat and clean; follows directions and procedures; makes up assignments and tests punctually;  notifies proper authorities of situations presenting potential safety hazards; does not use or knowingly permits others to use tools and equipment improperly;  stays on task and utilizes time constructively.
Organization

Manifests skill in prioritizing and management of time and stress; demonstrates flexibility in adapting to changes.

CommunicationCommunicates accurate information to others in a professional and courteous manner; displays appropriate nonverbal (eye contact, body language) and oral (listening, telephone etiquette, grammar) skills; asks pertinent questions; listens attentively to others.
LeadershipDisplays leadership skills; appropriately handles criticism; conflicts, and complaints; demonstrates problem-solving and decision-making capacity; maintains appropriate relationships with supervisors and peers; follows chain of command; conveys a willingness to assist others; demonstrate concern for treating people fairly and equitably.
RespectDeals appropriately with cultural/racial diversity; does not engage in harassment of any kind; treats instructors, staff, and fellow students with respect, courtesy, and tact.
