Indian River County is recruiting dual-certified firefighter/paramedics to be tested for the Fire-Medic position. Applications are being accepted from single- and dual-certified applicants. Requires shift work, 24 hours on and 48 hours off, within the Emergency Services Department / Fire Rescue Division concerned with emergency fire suppression and emergency medical response activities. The position performs skilled, specialized work of varying difficulty within the areas of combating, extinguishing and preventing fires; performing rescue and emergency medical services; performing life safety activities and/or performing special assignment duties in auxiliary services to support the department’s many programs. Detailed duties of the Fire-Medic position are located in the job description on file in the Indian River County Human Resources Department (or online at ircgov.com). A FULLY COMPLETED Indian River County Application for Employment, Fire-Medic Checklist, copies of qualifying certifications and other required documents as listed in minimum requirements below, must be received by the Human Resources Department by 5 p.m., January 6, 2017. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: All applicants MUST AT TIME OF APPLICATION: (1) be a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least 1 year prior to date employment application is received and agree to remain tobacco-free (in any form) during their employment; (2) have no DWI or DUI on driver’s license record for 3 years prior to appointment

For Single Certified Position applicants must be currently enrolled and attending class for State of Florida paramedic and provide, at time of application, copies of the following documentation:

  • Valid Florida driver license (must be at least 18 years old)
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma from a recognized issuing agency
  • Current valid Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance
  • Current Florida/National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license for single certified position
  • Current CPR certification
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC/CEVO) certification that reflects 16 hours
  • Notarized tobacco affidavit

For Dual Certified Position applicants must provide, at time of application, copies of the following documentation:

  • Valid Florida driver license (must be at least 18 years old)
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma from a recognized issuing agency
  • Current valid Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current valid Florida Paramedic License
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC/CEVO) certification that reflects 16 hours
  • Notarized tobacco affidavit

Testing: Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be required to successfully complete: a physical agility test; written and practical evaluations; an oral interview; a background investigation; and reference checks. More specific information as to testing dates, times, procedures, etc., will be provided to eligible candidates by the Emergency Services Department.

Only those candidates who successfully complete the testing process will be eligible to be considered for hire. Eligible candidates not hired will be placed on an unranked employment eligibility register (which will be maintained by the Emergency Services Department) to be considered for future position openings.

Candidates selected for hire will be required to complete drug and medical pre-employment screening. Selected candidates with single certification on their hire date must attain paramedic certification within 12 months of hire at their own expense and on their own time and be protocoled by the Medical Director within 12 months of attaining paramedic certification as a condition of employment. Dual certified candidates must be protocoled by the Medical Director within 12 months of hire as a condition of employment.
