*Must maintain current Florida certification of “Paramedic” as issued by the State of Florida Department of Health, and be approved by the Medical Director of Lake EMS to practice as a Paramedic under his/her license, and maintain that approval, to be paid an additional $2.50 per hour.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This job is located in the Operations section of the Tavares Fire Department and is under the general supervision of a Company Officer and/or Shift Commander. Firefighters will perform individually and/or as a member of a team and will participate in activities generally associated with the fire service, including but not limited to: controlling and extinguishing fire; performing rescue; providing emergency medical care at the Advance Life Support level; minimizing damage; climbing ladders, performing ventilation, forcible entry, salvage, and overhaul; and participating in inspection practices and public education. Firefighters will attend classroom and drill ground training sessions as directed. Decisions are made with the guidance of a supervisor, and on an individual level, and have a direct effect on life and property. Personal employee dedication to the City and Department mission statements, and the Department core values and goal, is expected.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Firefighting

  1. Personnel employed in the capacity of Firefighter for the City of Tavares:
    1. Shall have successfully completed Firefighter I (FSFC 109) and Firefighter II (FSFC 906) training under the Course Curriculum of the Florida State Fire College
    2. Shall be expected to routinely perform any skill taught in FSFC 109 and 906.
    3. Shall have completed a minimum standards course for firefighting in compliance with Florida Statute 633.408 and passed the State Test of the Florida State Fire College.
    4. Shall hold, or otherwise be able to qualify for, a Certificate of Compliance from the Florida State Fire College Bureau of Fire Standards and Training, as described in Florida Statute 633.412.
    5. Loss of certification capabilities shall be considered as job abandonment.

(Due to changes in Florida State Fire College curriculum and performance standards over time, Firefighter I and II requirements may be waived or considered “grandfathered” for existing employees. However all other requirements of this section shall not be waived.)

Emergency Medical Services

  1. Personnel employed in the capacity of Firefighter / Paramedic for the City of Tavares:
    1. Shall hold a current Florida license as a Paramedic, as administered by the Florida Department of Health.
    2. Shall maintain that license through continuing education and license renewal processes as determined by the Florida Department of Health, the Medical Director, and the Department.
    3. Shall routinely perform any actions associated with the rendering of emergency medical care up to the level of Paramedic / Advanced Life Support as defined by the Florida State Department of Health and the Department’s Medical Director.
    4. Loss of certification and license capabilities shall be considered as job abandonment.

 Work Related Activities

  1. Personnel employed in the capacity of Firefighter / Paramedic for the City of Tavares:
    1. Shall maintain and expand professional knowledge and/or proficiency through a variety of means, including but not limited to; training, continuing education, formal education, and personal and professional growth opportunities.
    2. Shall maintain knowledge of Tavares Fire Department Rules, Regulations and Policies, City Rules and Regulations and special contracts.
    3. Shall help create and maintain a harmonious workplace.
    4. Shall foster and maintain a workplace that gives Safety a high level of importance.
    5. Shall maintain themselves, their personal protective equipment, the workplace, Department vehicles, and issued uniform clothing with a high degree of pride, professionalism, cleanliness, and care.
    6. Shall complete documentation as necessary; including writing service requests, fire reports, patient care reports, supply orders, E-Mails, and narratives.
    7. Shall be routinely responsible for the procurement, storing, administration, and accountability of certain medications and equipment, including Class IV Controlled Substances.
    8. May move up to out-of-grade position of Engineer upon completion of Department criteria for move-up Engineer.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess a valid Florida State issued Driver’s License and maintain insurability for operating motor vehicles.
  2. Possess a certificate of completion from an accredited Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC).

TOBACCO USE:

Shall be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by the sworn affidavit of the applicant. (XXXVI Florida Statute, Chapter 633, Section 34)

Employees hired after December 1, 2016 shall be a non-smoker and a non-user of tobacco for the remainder of their term of employment with the City, and this shall be considered a condition of employment as it pertains to the continuation of employment. (T.F.D. Policy on Tobacco Use and Smoking – 1.08)

Employees hired prior to December 1, 2016 are prohibited from smoking and using tobacco products while on duty, after that date.

Firefighters are evaluated on an annual basis in the following areas and with these criteria. These criteria are considered as a minimal standard. Exceeding these minimal standards is preferred and encouraged.
