An employee in this position functions as a Dispatcher for emergency and non-emergency responses for the fire rescue department.  This critical position obtains all pertinent information to establish the correct medical or fire response.

Occasionally, on potentially life-threatening situations, the Emergency Dispatcher will provide pre-arrival medical or fire instructions, until the first responding Fire-Rescue unit arrives on the scene. These are in depth advanced level instructions given in time-critical situations, where correct evaluation, verification, and advice are essential. There are currently multiple positions available.

Representative Duties 

  • Answers multi-line telephone system.
  • Process emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Transmits and receives transmissions on a complex 800 MHz trunked radio system.
  • Make decisions as to categorization of emergencies received from 9-1-1 calls.
  • Strategic selection of emergency fire and/or rescue apparatus to accomplish the goals of saving lives and property.
  • First Responder to medical emergencies.
  • Uses computers, telephones, radios, maps and printed resource materials to process emergency information accurately and quickly.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High School or equivalent and two years experience in a multi-task environment.
  • Must have a clear and easily understood voice. Successful completion of dispatcher assessment.
  • Must obtain Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification within one year of employment and maintain certification while employed. All employees are required to complete EMD refresher training every two years.
  • Must obtain Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) certification within one year of employment and maintain certification while employed. Employees are required to complete PST refresher training every two years.

Testing:  Qualified applicants will be invited to a mandatory orientation and testing session in the first or second week of January 2017. You will be contacted via email. If invited, you must sign up and attend this session to continue in the hiring process. All information regarding this process will be emailed to the address that you include on your application.

Schedule:  Must be able to work any shift work assigned (12 hour rotating night and day shifts). Personnel currently work two 12 hour day shifts, are then off for two days, and then work two 12 hour night shifts, and are then off for two days.
