ARCHITECTURE & CONSTRUCTION

Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Heating Technology 1 & 2 (HVAC)
Lake Technical College was awarded $260,000 to start an HVAC Apprenticeship program in partnership with Kalos Services in Clermont. This apprenticeship program will provide a pathway for students who have completed the HVAC program and wish to continue growing in the field.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION

Accounting Operations and Administrative Office Specialist
The Accounting Operations and Administrative Office Specialist students have been hard at work. We have a long list of students who wowed us with their professionally made PowerPoints and topic knowledge:

As we approached the holiday season we’re proud to announce the completion of Accounting Operations for Ms. Tina Quickenton! Although we all will miss her infectious enthusiasm and impressive work ethic, we look forwarding to hearing of her continued success in the workforce. Following in her footsteps to program completion we have Anthony Ogburn, Rachele Brown and Sandrea Ousley with their completion of OCP A, and Meagan Thayer and Ysamar Cervantes with their completion of OCP C! Keep up the great work guys! LaQuinta (Q) Jones completed OCP-B, another great stepping stone to graduating in June!

Speaking of completion, student leaders Courtney Robbins, LaQuinta Jones, and Kayleigh Tussey concluded their final week at Lake Tech’s student kiosk. Stay tuned in to find out who your next student leaders are and for exciting news of new locations and merchandise for this student run bookstore!

The SkillsUSA leaders also held fundraisers and community service opportunities.

HEALTH SCIENCE

Fire Fighter/Emergency Medical Technician – Combined
The EMS Department welcomes the Combo students to the main campus to complete the second part of the FF/EMT Combo program. These students completed the Fire Fighting portion of the program on November 15 at the Lake Tech Institute of Public Safety campus.

Paramedic
On December 19, 16 students graduated from the Paramedic program. The ceremony was held at the Eustis Community Center and Shane Matthews, Retired Corporal from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Tech Alum was the guest speaker.

Nursing Assistant (Evening Class/Eustis Campus)
On December 16, Ms. Brown’s evening Eustis Nursing Assistant class graduated. They are all ready to take their state licensure exam and go to work! This program is 120 hours in length and prepares students for work in long term health care facilities and provides a pathway for further education in the healthcare field.

Patient Care Technician
The students in Ms. Hampton’s Patient Care Technician program practiced their phlebotomy skills by setting up a lab and inviting students, faculty, and staff to have their blood drawn. Not only did the students practice their technical skills, but they practiced meeting and greeting the “patients” and providing the good customer skills needed for this type of position.

Pharmacy Technician
Our Pharmacy Technician students has been busy! Several of our students started their first 100 hour pharmacy externship, where they work in the industry under the direction of a pharmacy preceptor providing medications to actual patients using the skills they simulated in our mock retail pharmacy lab. We also attended a Florida Board of Pharmacy meeting on December 4th, so that students could understand the role of the Board in the scope of practice and disciplinary processes of both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Our Pharmacy Technician III students prepared for their hospital externships this week by learning proper aseptic technique to prepare IV medications.

We were also glad to see a student who graduated in March 2018 return to campus to take and pass her Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. Congratulations to Jeorgett Stringer, as she expands her career opportunities. Jeorgett is currently a Lead Technician at CVs in Leesburg. We love to hear the success stories of our former students.

Practical Nursing (Weekend Class)
As we wind up December, we began introducing more math and critical thinking by giving multiple scenarios and the class is excelling. The students continue to work on their Nurses Notes and doing Head to Toe Assessments. In addition, the students celebrated the holidays with a potluck lunch.

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM

Professional Culinary Arts & Hospitality
Can you imagine taking an MRE (Military Meals Ready to Eat) and turning them into gourmet dining? Lake Tech’s Culinary students did just that and their presentations were amazing.

The Culinary students have begun growing herbs and vegetables! An outdoor planter box was built by the construction students under the supervision of instructor AJ Bryant and then painted by Roy Peters, maintenance mechanic. True teamwork at Lake Tech!

ICE Elf on the Shelf?

Baking and Pastry Arts
The gingerbread houses are absolutely amazing! (See the pictures below) The houses were part of a silent auction to raise money for SkillsUSA.

HUMAN SERVICES

Cosmetology
Did you know that the US Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that employment for cosmetologists is expected to grow eight percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations? The demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other advanced hair treatments has risen in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue over the coming decade.

Cosmetologists don’t just learn how to cut hair and blow it dry which require skill and practice! They must study safety and infection control, chemistry, anatomy, diseases and disorders of the hair and skin, and entrepreneurship. They must hone their creative skills, develop good interpersonal and customer service skills, and be able to critically think. At Lake Tech, cosmetology students are prepared for a very successful future in this field.

LAW, PUBLIC SAFETY & SECURITY

Florida Law Enforcement Academy
Crossover from Correctional Officer to Law Enforcement Officer
Graduation for the Florida Law Enforcement Academy (day and evening programs) as well as the Crossover from Correctional Officer to Law Enforcement Officer program was held on December 17 at the Clermont Arts and Recreation Facility.

ADULT EDUCATION

With a focus on social studies and the theme of early exploration and colonization, Adult Education students have been using a variety of media formats to investigate and answer questions about how America came to be formed, by whom, and why?  Web searches and videos, articles, and group work has been the floorplan for this month’s curriculum.

Many ABE/GED students participated in GED Ready Days in December.  Instructors offered GED Ready practice tests to those students whose reading scores and other group/independent work showed readiness for GED assessments.  It was so powerful to see a whole room of students working on their GED READYs at the same time. We are so excited for all of them!  Our students are motivated to complete their goals and move into CTE programs or continue higher education!

CTE/HVAC focus has been on real-world, career related math problems.  Multi-step word problems and questions such as: “What do I do?” and, “Which numbers do I use?” have been the focal point of conversations amongst the group.  Also, incorporation of career related graphs, tables, schematics have come into play.  A big thanks to Mr. Bagg and his HVAC students for welcoming two Adult Education students to shadow his program.  Students returned, absolutely beaming with excitement over what that they saw and did in the HVAC lab.

We saw many students attain their high school diplomas this week.  Congratulations to all!

Adult Education instructors, Mrs. Girard and Mrs. Netherton, went to a workshop about using Close Reading Strategies for all subjects, but in particular math since most of the questions on the TABE and GED tests are word problems.  Ron Cruz, from the Institute for the Professional Development of Adult Educators (IPDAE), is an expert in the field of teaching math. He demonstrated many strategies for helping students grasp math concepts. We practiced with fraction squares, seen in the pictures here, and several others, including math charades. It was a fun and helpful workshop that we will be sharing with our coworkers. The students have already used the fraction squares, and we intend on trying the math charades strategy soon.
