Health Sciences

Nursing Assistant – The day Nursing Assistant students graduated on Thursday, November 19, 2015.

The evening Nursing Assistant students will be graduating on Saturday, December 19.

Practical Nursing – Capping and Pinning will be held for the full-time nursing class on Friday, December 11 at 7 pm. The ceremony will be held at Epiphany Anglican Church on Bay Street, Eustis.

Hospitality & Tourism

The Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts students outdid themselves this week preparing meals for several tour groups.

On Tuesday, Lake Tech hosted all of Lake County Public Schools’ guidance counselors so they could learn why Lake Tech is an excellent option for both dual enrollment and postsecondary education. The Culinary students prepared and served a wonderful buffet and dessert.

 

Lake Tech also hosted Lake County high school students who are participating in Take Stock in Children. Again, the Culinary students prepared a wonderful lunch for the students who toured several of Lake Tech’s programs while on campus.

And then, the usual classwork – desserts, ice sculptures and sushi!

Manufacturing

Last week, Jack Miller and Diane Culpepper attended the Manufacturers Association of Central Florida’s Annual Jingle Mingle at the Florida Makes Office in Orlando.  Lake Tech is a silver sponsor of MACF.

Law & Public Safety

Law Enforcement Academy / Correctional Officer – Day Law is currently in Traffic Crash Investigations and graduates on December 16^th. Night Law is currently in the Call for Service block. Corrections is continuing in Defensive Tactics and graduates on the December 21^st.

Fire Fighter – 36 Fire Fighters graduated on November 20. US Congressman Dan Webster was the keynote speaker. This was the first time in the history of the Fire Academy that 100% of the students passed the state fire test on the first attempt. Chief Ron Williams and his team are to be commended. Dr. Lindamood worked with the students during the entire program and also had a big part in their success. Congratulations to all of the students.

Transportation, Distribution & Logistics

Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing – Student Anthony Peterkin is working at Service King in Orlando as a co-op student. In the picture, he is removing sheet metal from a Mustang that was damaged when it struck a pole.

Diesel Technology – Diesel student Brian spent this week disassembling an Eaton 10 speed transmission. In addition, instructor Randy Yates congratulated Brandon Dodgen for graduating from Medium/Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician 1 program (also known as Diesel Technology).

 

Automotive Service Technology – Students returned after Thanksgiving break ready to work. They removed engines out of vehicles, disassembled, cleaned, took measurements, identified parts and costs for repair, and then reassembled and put the engines back into the vehicles and watched those vehicles run again after being apart.

Some of our students spent Thanksgiving week at different car shows and automotive events and they share some of these pictures with us there’s also pictures of some of the engines our students have dissected this week.

Adult Education

GED Prep – There were several science lessons this week.  One group studied Newton’s 3 Laws and wrapped up the unit by drawing pictures illustrating “balanced and unbalanced forces” from everyday life situations.  We laughed at each other’s stick figures and embraced the chance to verbally explain our pictures and written explanations.  Another group discussed the process of photosynthesis and the importance of plants for our planet.  We even did some math – balancing molecular equations.

The class celebrated Mr. Seidner’s birthday with cake and song!

 

National Adult Education Honor Society

The National Adult Education Honor Society induction ceremony took place on December 2. Medical Assisting instructor Beth Thornton provided some inspirational words for the inductees.  If you would like further information about NAEHS, please check them out on the web at http://www.naehs.org.

Door Decorating Contest

Students across campus worked diligently to try and outdo each other with their door decorations. The winner is announced on Monday.

 

National Technical Honor Society

Any students you wish to nominate for NTHS must turn in their applications, along with the $30 NTHS membership fees, to the Business Office by November 18 at 3:30 pm. The induction ceremony will take place in the EMS Building on Thursday, December 17 at 2 pm. Erika Greene, from Lake County Economic Development will be the keynote speaker.

Office of Student Success

Dr. Lindamood also does presentations on stress management, communication skills, and personality type: understanding yourself and your interactions with others, and she works with academically challenged students individually. Our Student Success Counselor is here to help you help our students be successful.

Career Success Center Room 208A – The Career Success Center is open on Mondays (11 am until 6:30 pm), Wednesdays and Fridays (8:30 am until 4 pm). Services offered include developing and refining resumes, cover letters, and portfolios, interviewing techniques, job search assistance, and much more. Please share this information with students and graduates. The Career Success Center is located in Room A-208.

Professional Skills Seminars – On Tuesday, December 8 David Hopkins, the Executive Director of Benton House in Clermont, will be our Professional Skills Seminar speaker.  Mr. Hopkins has experience as a COO and a Director of various health care agencies and has experience in hiring, firing, and managing staff.  He is also a dynamic speaker and knows how to hold an audience’s attention.  You don’t want to miss this one.

Mr. Hopkins will be presenting at 9am and 1 pm in the EMT classroom on the main campus of Lake Tech.  Each presentation will be approximately one hour.  Register your class with Sonya Rosenglick.
