Friday Update 9/6/13

This Week at Lake Tech….

Academic Affairs

Business Management & Administration
We just completed a short but busy week. We welcomed Ms. Brinda Rurhlen as the newest member of our Accounting Operations class. In addition to working on individual assignments, we also had a general presentation about communications. We began with a showing of the classic video “Who’s on First” by Abbot and Costello. Following a lively discussion, Ms. Caitlyn Lewis won a drawing for a “Who’s on First” T-shirt from the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

Proving that many hands make a large job easy; our class took time to help update a Lake Tech schedule so that it could be distributed on a timely basis. Ms. Zana Dudley, an Accounting Operations student, used her knowledge of PowerPoint to develop a “study habit” presentation for Admissions.

In our class we worked on various topics such as employee skills, keyboarding and transcriptions. We also worked on various topics such as mail merge, troubleshooting using Excel spreadsheets, and working machine transcriptions.

The full time LPN evening group took a field trip to the Villages to learn and perfect their computer charting skills. Thank you, so very much Jeana Drew, RN! We really appreciate the time that you put into our students and their education!

Paramedic students aren’t wasting any time getting started on their skills. This week the students discussed blood chemistry and normal values and demonstrated the technique of obtaining venous and capillary blood for testing. Below Paramedic student Brett Baldwin is practicing drawing blood, while Paramedic student Joe Evans assists. Students first practice of an anatomical arm, and then they will get an opportunity to practice the skill on each other.

Transportation & Logistics
This week, many of the Auto Service Technology students had the opportunity to learn about the micrometer and the names of some of the many tools used in the industry.

The students in the Diesel Technology program are into their work already!

Adult Education

Important Information: Do you need your high school diploma and want to take the GED test? Did you know that if you’ve already started the test but haven’t finished, your scores expire at the end of 2013? The new GED test comes out in January 2014.

Another busy week in the AAAE/GED classroom went by. We had group lessons on percents, fractions, parts of sentences, and language usage (those pesky nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs). Mrs. Avelli put a Seurat (the artist) picture up on the screen and had the students write about what they saw. Some wrote a sentence, some a paragraph, and some even knew what type of painting it was. We are concentrating on getting students to write, using the computer for word documents, and crossing curriculum to help students prepare for the new GED and careers.

We had several students make gains on their TABE scores, and one even got his scores to get into their technical program already!
