IN THE WEEKS AHEAD AT LAKE TECHNICAL COLLEGE

We Love Our Custodians! – On October 3, Lake Tech celebrated National Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day by thanking them with a delicious lunch and dessert made and served by the Culinary students. Our custodial staff do an outstanding job of keeping our campus clean and safe for our faculty, staff and students. Thanks to Irene, Belinda, Maria, Julia, Mark T., Rob, Mark P. and Danny!

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION
Accounting Operations / Administrative Office Specialist – Hurricane Irma has caused a lot of damage and devastation for a lot of people, however, there is something wonderful that has occurred while we were dealing with the struggle of loss of electricity, cleaning up debris, and trying to get our lives back to normal. Our own Accounting/Administrative Office Specialist instructor, Samantha Hayes gave birth to her first child, Joey Yates. Her class sends their congratulations to both Ms. Hayes and Diesel Technician instructor, Mr. Yates.

Despite their instructor being out on maternity leave, the Accounting and Administrative Office Specialist class have been working hard since Hurricane Irma caused our school to be shut down for over a week. Christopher S., Kendra D., and Savannah W. have already completed OCP A well within their allotted course hours given to in order complete OCP A.

This week marks the beginning of the month of October; our Accounting and AOS classes started to show our fall spirit! Classmates Tiffany and Amber, both started the month off by enhancing their desks with props and decorations for a Halloween theme. Both desks came out spook-tacular, showing our students creativity and putting us in the spooky spirit.

This week programs around the school were also starting. We had four of our classmates running for Skills USA officer positions. Chris, Kendra, Oscar, and Angelina all prepared speeches and went around the school campaigning (Pictured to the left). Also, student ambassadors were selected. Savannah, Chris, Kendra, and Heidi will all be representing our Accounting and AOS classes at the monthly ambassador meetings. (Pictured on the Right)

HEALTH SCIENCE
Practical Nursing –
Students from all three practical nursing programs attended the National Association of Licensed Practical Nurses conference on September 29. Congratulations to the Lake Technical College students from the Clermont program who won first place in a competition that tested their knowledge of practical nursing! The winning team brought home a beautiful trophy and each student on the team received a check towards their educational expenses.

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM

TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS
Automotive Collision Technology Technician – Steven Giles, is the first student to receive the I-CAR Platinum status in both Non-structural and Refinishing technician, while enrolled in the Auto Collision program.

ADULT EDUCATION
GED – This week, we had another high school graduate, Selena.  She took GED classes at our Career Source LTC site.  Congratulations to her!  Many other GED students are completing GED Ready tests and are on their way to taking the real GED tests soon.

Stephanie, another GED student, demonstrated a talent she has for folding paper into shapes, or the art of Origami.  It takes good hand-eye coordination and the ability to see patterns, which are skills needed for many jobs and especially for math.  We have many talented students here at Lake Tech!

For Literacy Week, in the ABE classroom, students were given a 2-day crash course on writing a check and balancing accounts. Day #1, writing a check, and yes, we taught cursive handwriting to those who could not sign their names. Day# 2, students had to balance a check registry using varying deposits and purchases.  All work had to be shown and entered into the check register correctlyJ It was a great math literacy lesson as well as a hands-on, concrete real-life math exercise.

Reading students ventured into the realm of Elizabethan literature with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.  When Laurie Bryant stopped by, even she got into the action and took a speaking part.

On the HVAC/P3 side of things, students came together to help solve an algebraic question from the Kaplan GED book. It was great to have all the P3’s working on the same question to solve. Lots of brain power going on. The question is included, see if you can get the correct answerJ

Afternoon Adult Basic Education – We’ve read some great articles this week, and our students are really engaging in reading. We’ve spent lots of time on finding grammatical errors, difficult spelling patterns, and parts of speech.  These students are motivated and learning!

ESOL – Main Campus – The English language is a work in progress. Have fun with it. – Jonathan Culver

And we do! Whether we are learning grammar, reading, writing, or sharing conversations, there is always time for laughter and friendship. It keeps us connected and motivated.

This week in Advanced English, our students have participated in lots of conversations about giving and reading directions. We’ve read interesting stories, written many sentences, and compared adjectives. Beginning English has learned new words to express their feelings, and is gaining vocabulary for conversation. We’ve also learned a bit about the history of the United States, and about our own journeys along the way.

ESOL – Clermont Campus – The pictures below are from the morning ESOL class in Clermont. What a joyous group! Here we are celebrating Hispanic month with some delicious food from Cuba and Venezuela. Art and Deanna have been simply fantastic in their Herculean support of the class, the program and of me at Lake Sumter. The students love the work and they were doing presentations today in English! I am so proud of them!! I hope these pictures give your Friday Update a glimpse of our amazing students in Lake Tech/Clermont campus.
