ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

HEALTH SCIENCE

Medical Assisting – Last week was Medical Assistants Recognition Week. Medical Assistants are the heart of health care as they serve by being the liaison between patients and doctors. They are the front-line professionals, are able to multitask and assist in patient education, and treat patients with respect and compassion. Medical Assistants contribute to the efficiency of the office or clinic!

The Lake Tech Medical Assisting students had fun as they celebrated MA Week. They had a camo/western day, a pajama day, and a super hero day. Marie Weigleman, president of Florida’s Medical Assistant AAMA society, spoke to the students about the profession.

Practical Nursing – A new full-time, day-time Practical Nursing program will be offered on the Lake Sumter State College campus in Sumter County beginning in January, 2017.  This program is a fast track as completing a CNA course is a prerequisite. HUMAN SERVICES

Cosmetology – the A.M. Cosmetology students are working with straight hair wefts to test the theory of curl size being true to rod size. A little smelly, but a lot of fun.

 

LAW & PUBLIC SAFETY

Fire Academy Special Operations – The VMR Technician class finished this week. Firefighters from around the region attended this advanced specialized class in order to keep their skills honed.

TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS

For the first time, Lake Technical College will be participating in the Central Florida Auto Dealers Show at the Orange County Convention Center. We will be there beginning Thursday, November 24 through Sunday, November 27. If you are interested in volunteering to stand by the Lake Tech display and maintain the flyers on the table, please contact David Beliveau or Mark McKinney. This is the premier auto show in Central Florida and we are excited that Lake Tech will be represented.

Diesel (Medium & Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician) – Students in instructor Randy Yates Diesel program made a really cool coffee table to raise money for SkillsUSA. If you are interested in purchasing the table, let Mr. Yates know!

Auto Serve Technology – This week we welcomed three new students to the AST program.  The rest of our students have been busy with vehicle inspections, engine installs, estimates and complete vehicle tear-downs as well as tire changing and balancing. The pictures show two of our students in action, they’re practicing their skills and trying to set a record for who can mount and dismount a tire the fastest.

  

ADULT EDUCATION

Adult Education – This week, Deanna Thomas and our full-time adult education instructors went to a best practices workshop.  About 120 adult education administrators, counselors, instructors, and testing and data people gathered in Yehaw Junction to share their best practices with each other.  Many ideas were exchanged from the various technical, community, and state colleges about the great things happening in their adult education programs. We gave a presentation on two of our best practices – using the Schoology learning management system for instructor orientation, face-to-face and online student orientation, and lessons.  We also presented our “Road to Success” poster and individual goal sheets that we use with students to help them visualize and track their own progress through the ABE and GED program.  There were many great ideas that we brought back with us and will share with all the adult education staff/faculty.  We had many best practices that others were excited about and interested in using – since we have a GREAT program here at LTC!

On the home front, ABE students ventured into a lessons on science/language integration as well as geometry. We collected plant samples from outside the classroom and created descriptive paragraphs. Students edited paragraphs on the board and discussed parts of speech and comma usage. Then, we went on a geometric shape scavenger hunt and identified various shapes in the classroom. Afterwards, we used these shapes to find perimeter and area.

In GED, students were busy preparing for their Ged Ready tests and scheduling Ged tests~ Also, Mrs. Netherton left a very cool lesson on circles which included a video on Pi in the shape of dominoes. Students were amazed at how the Pi shape was formed by over 114. 000 dominoes and taking 1 hr to design.  The ripple effect of the falling dominoes left them in hysterics~ We had to watch it 2X~

  

ESOL – Food, fun, and friendship are important components in learning a new language, and about other cultures as well. We always make time for each and for each other.

On Tuesday, October 18, Nancy Muenzmay conducted a seminar on Starting Up Your Own Business to the Accounting Operations, Administrative Office Specialist, and the Cosmetology program students.  Mrs. Muenzmay spoke about the different types of businesses, what steps are needed to start up a new business, and what it takes to make it survive.  The students were very interested and asked many good questions.  Ms. Muenzmay will do one more seminar on this topic this semester on December 13, 2016 at 2pm in the Board Room.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

FACTE (Florida Association of Career and Technical Education) is offering free online courses that may be used for in-service points for recertification. In addition, some of these courses are approved for initial teacher certification (see Melissa Stephan for details). The classes last about 4-6 weeks, are offered online, and require attendance at a live session once a week. These courses are funded in part through Perkins. Registrations are being accepted for the Fall courses only at this time. The following courses are next up!

IN THE COMMUNITY

Kim Frazier represented Lake Tech at the Goodwill Clermont Job Fair last week. She also participated in the Leesburg High School College Night event.

Representatives from Power Technology Southeast in Leesburg, will be on campus Tuesday for a tour. Power Tech is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of mobile diesel generators. http://www.powertechgenerators.com/

Representatives from Brookdale Senior Living in Leesburg, will be on campus Wednesday for a tour.
