Academic Affairs

Arts, AV & Technology

Digital Design – The new Digital Design students earned their 1^st OCP and are now Information Tech Assistants and were rewarded with a “sweet” treat. Digital 1 and 2 students learned that X-acto precision is a surprising challenge. At the end of the week, the students promoted Breast Cancer Awareness with a “pink” display that will be exhibited all month.

 

Health Sciences

EMS – The paramedic students spent the work learning various methods of intubation. Intubation is the process of inserting a tube through the mouth and then into the airway. This is done to assist the patient with breathing.

Human Services

Cosmetology – The Cosmetology students learning and practicing all types of fashion braids.

Information Technology

Computer Systems & Information Technology – The new CSIT program is enrolling students now for an October 22 start date. Students will be prepared for A+, Net+ and Security+ certifications.

Transportation, Distribution & Logistics

Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing – Instructor David Beliveau and Melissa Stephan toured ABC Companies in Winter Garden. This company is an exclusive Vantool bus distributor. They employ paint and body folks and have many opportunities for our Diesel and Digital Design students.

Auto Service Technology – The Auto Service Technology students have been working on different projects this week including assembling engines and taking the body off the frame of one of our donated vehicles. They also color coded this three cylinder engine to make the parts stand out and make them easier to identify. Students need to learn the names of the various parts of the engines, how the internal combustion engine works, and be able to identify the different parts and pieces that are needed to turbocharge an engine.

 

Adult Education

GED Prep and ESOL – This week the teachers were the students! All of the instructors from the main campus and the off-site locations attended the 25^th Anniversary Florida ACE (Adult and Community Education) Conference in Orlando. Information packed breakout sessions with presenters from the local, state and federal level provided the latest guidelines for adult education for this coming year and beyond. This conference is one of our best sources of the information required to operate our adult education programs.

Our instructors are eager for the opening ceremony to begin! Following the ceremony, we attend sessions where other adult education instructors and leaders teach us best practices to use when working with GED and ESOL students. Get ready, students! Our instructors have exciting new resources, ideas from their peer teachers, useful websites and more.

Our ESOL instructors enjoyed meeting together to share ideas on things they are doing in their classes to help their students master the English language. We also had a fun discussion on incorporating “College and Career Readiness” into our ESOL classes!

Student Affairs

Office of Student Success – This week, Lake Tech Paramedic students had the opportunity to strengthen their academic skills as Dr. Lindamood presented information regarding how to read a textbook, moving material from short-term to long-term memory, and analyzing multiple choice test questions.  If your students could use help with study skills or test taking strategies, contact Dr. Lindamood at EXT. 1824.

Dr. Lindamood also does presentations on stress management, communication skills, and personality type: understanding yourself and your interactions with others, and she works with academically challenged students individually. Our Student Success Counselor is here to help you help our students be successful.

Professional Skills Seminars – Attend the four Professional Skills Seminars this year to find out what employers from our community say about skills needed in Lake County.  Did you know that employers in our community need skilled workers who also have soft skills?  This is what they said.  Come to the Professional Skills Seminars to learn exactly what these employers are saying and what skills you need to know to get hired here in Lake County….directly from them. There will be 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sessions on the following dates:

In the Community

Jack Miller, Yvonne Pruett, and Kim Frazier represented Lake Tech at the Manufacturing Career Fair held at the ViaPort Mall in Leesburg.

Liefke Meyers, from the Orlando Economic Development Commission, toured Lake Tech on Thursday, October 8. She was especially impressed with our slogan “A Career in a Year” and the placement rates of our graduates.

Kim Frazier, faculty, and students represented Lake Tech at the College Fair held at Lake Sumter State College on Monday.

Kim Frazier represented Lake Tech at the Clermont Goodwill Job Fair on Tuesday.

Diane Culpepper, incoming chair for the United Way of Lake & Sumter Counties, helped present a check for $10,000 to Rimes Early Learning and Literacy Center.

Diane Culpepper has been asked to make a presentation at the annual Council on Occupational Education Annual Meeting in November. The topic will be “Strategic Planning – Process and Implementation.”

Tech Tips

Tech Tuesdays are back! If you are interested in attending a series of 10 workshops this year, please come to the initial meeting on Tuesday, October 27 at 3pm to hear how we will be flipping this workshop. You will be able to earn 20 MIP points.  Attendance is half online and half workshop attendance.  These face-to-face workshops will be held once per month in Sonya’s lab from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm. The online attendance will be via Schoology, a learning management system.
