HEALTH SCIENCE

Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician students visited Bay Pharmacy in Eustis, Florida earlier this month, where they toured the retail, compounding, and long term care pharmacy facilities and learned about the workflow of each department. The Pharmacist, Gordon, explained some of the most common pharmaceutical compounding dosage forms the pharmacy prepares, including gels, capsules, troches, creams, ointments, and suppositories. Some patients cannot use a commercially available product due to strength or ingredient sensitivity, so the pharmacy works with physicians and veterinarians to tailor products specifically for a patient’s need.

Lori Blake, VP of Operations, showed the students sample medication orders and MARs that their pharmacy receives from facilities, and how they use multiple types of packaging to cater to each facility’s need. She also showed the students the technology used to package medications, and they got to meet with technicians who handle the accounting and data entry for the facility.

Many students are graduating in June and are preparing for their certification exam to become a nationally credentialed CPhT, Certified Pharmacy Technician. Four students have already taken and passed the exam already! Several students were also recently inducted into the National Technical Honor Society – congratulations!

Charlene Todd (pictured) was selected for Student of the Month for May. Congratulations, Charlene!

Practical Nursing

Recently the Practical Nursing Clermont class participated in the Central Florida Disaster Drill. They volunteered to role play as victims at South Lake Hospital. It was a learning experience for the students as they were able to comprehend the urgency in a mass crisis.

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM

Professional Culinary Arts & Hospitality

Baking & Pastry Arts

Recently the Professional Culinary Arts & Hospitality students had a guest Chef visit the class. Chef Christina Bodanza, a recently added advisory committee member from The Villages Regional Hospital gave a demo on plant forward foods and how they are incorporating them at the hospital. Chef Bodanza also discussed potential opportunities for employment with the students.

The students have been working on many projects and competencies. Cameron Holmes worked on Molecular Gastronomy Techniques of Spherification and Shaya Raulerson created Mint Cream Horns using Puff Pastry. David Serrano created a mirror cake and Carolina Morgan created a Canapé display mirror. Mary Pugh proudly showed two of her amazing cake creations.

ADULT EDUCATION

Adult Basic Education/GED® Prep/ESOL

The Adult Education students are working diligently to complete their GED subject tests and are doing an amazing job! Congratulations to Cereyna, who just passed her last GED test and is now a graduate! Cereyna immediately began the process of enrolling into the Licensed Practical Nursing program at Lake Tech. She has the personality and the drive to become a well-respected and successful nurse and is excited to begin the next step in her journey.

ARCHITECTURE & CONSTRUCTION

Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC/R)

Recently the Pathway Plus Program (P3) students in the HVAC/R program were busy preparing for their last subject area test, math. The integrated lesson involved a follow up to the recent job fair with discussion on the “do’s and don’ts” after a job interview. With many students about to graduate, they found this work related topic to be very beneficial. The students continue to hone their skills and work toward completion of individual goals. Renier is brazing at different angles to become more precise with the brazing rod and techniques. Robert is analyzing a wiring diagram to correctly draw a circuit, and Alec and Saif are identifying types of motors and parts within a packaged unit and refrigeration system.

Groups have been busy working in the labs, both inside and outside. Students are excited and gearing up for graduating and getting to work!

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Enterprise Desktop and Mobile Support Technology

Recently the Enterprise Desktop and Mobile Support Technology students worked with Networking equipment on the Server Rack to set up a small network and get all of the components to communicate with each other. Each group had to create a small network diagram with IP addresses that included a wired and wireless network. The equipment they had to configure and set up included a server running Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Print, and File Management.  Other devices in the rack included a firewall, router, switch, wireless access point, and a NAS. They had to connect a printer and computers to verify they would connect and get information for their network and get internet connectivity. Awesome job!
