This technical certificate program for firefighting is a comprehensive course consisting of lectures, practical, and "LIVE" fire training. The program is designed to prepare the student to become a Florida State Certified Firefighter.

** Covers expenses for fuels, bandages, extinguisher refills, and other consumable supplies. Covers use of air system, maintenance, and air quality testing.
Withdrawal Refund Policy: through the closing of the first day of class, 100%; withdrawal up to 50 hours or the closing of the day on which the 50th hour occurs, 80%.

ADMISSION CRITERIA
To apply for admission into the Minimum Standards Firefighting Recruit Program, each applicant must:

Not smoke or use tobacco. Tobacco use is strictly prohibited by Florida Statue 633.34.6. If you are a tobacco user, you will not be allowed in the class and cannot become a firefighter in the State of Florida.

Be at least 18 years of age. |

Have not been convicted of any felony or of any misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude. |

Be a high school graduate or possess its equivalent (GED). |
| |
Have passed a physical examination by a licensed Florida physician within the past six months, meeting the requirements of the Division of State Fire Marshal Bureau of Fire Standards and Training Medical Examination Form, FST-2, including EKG and hearing test. |

Be of good moral character. |
| |
Possess a valid Florida Driver's License. |
| |
Show your driver's license history and it is required to be included with your application packet. This must be a certified record from a court house. Applicants with excessive points or license suspended within the last three years will be disqualified. |
Institute of Public Safety Application Procedure:

Take the state mandatory Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) unless you possess an A.A., A.S., B.A., or B.S. degree. Bring original college diploma or transcripts to Lake Technical Center in Eustis to qualify for an exemption. The TABE is given at the LTC main campus in Eustis 352.589.2250 on Mondays and Thursdays either 8:15 a.m. or 5:45 p.m. at a cost of $20.00. No appointment is necessary for the TABE. Picture ID is required.

Admission to the Program will be Based on the Following:

Approved Institute of Public Safety Application including the TABE requirement. |

Applicant must pass Physical Ability Test (PAT) evaluation. Orientation is held at Institute of Public Safety. |

AFTER YOU HAVE PASSED THE PAT, You must go online to a Pearsonvue website to apply and pay for a BFST Background check. The fingerprint fee (currently $57.25) must be paid by credit card on that site. You will then go to a Pearsonvue site of your choice to have your prints taken. You must also bring with you to your first class session, a $30.00 check or money order made payable to: The Florida Dept. of Financial Services. This pays for your BFST application and state exam. |
