Today in America on Location in Eustis

The City of Eustis hosted the United States Media TV camera crew on Wednesday, May 2 who was in town filming an upcoming segment of “Today in America with Terry Bradshaw”. The film crew began their day filming at the Lake Tech main campus. The crew also filmed at Ferran Park and Historic Downtown, as well as other locations around the City.

Academic Affairs

Arts, AV Technology & Communication
Wildwood Middle High School will be visiting Kerrie Johnson’s Digital Design program in order to build their own program. Kerrie will assist and will also be able to develop a path so that the students can enroll in the Lake Tech program once they graduate from high school.

Kerrie also visited the Lake Minneola High School Digital Design program to share information about how they can continue their program at Lake Tech after graduation.

Human Services
The Cosmetology students had an exciting runway project that they worked on this week. The students themselves picked the project and era. They picked their own teams of four to five students and one model. The objective was to produce a 40’s-50’s makeup and hair look. They had four hours to complete the look and have their model ready for the runway. Ms. Betty Jones and Dr. Lindamood served as the judges, and based their decision on the complexity of the style and makeup look. The students had a GREAT time working on this project, and the winning team received free facials. Special thanks to Tonyia Burnham and Tonia Whalen for holding down the “fort” and doing such a fun project with the students while instructors Charity and DeAnna were away at the SkillsUSA State Conference!

Law, Public Safety & Security
It has been another phenomenal week at Lake Tech’s Institute of Public Safety. Day Law Class took the Crime Scene Investigation exam this week and did very well. Night Law is currently on the Gun Range and shooting very well. Corrections Recruits have been on the Gun Range this week and all have passed the practical portion of the block of instruction.

On Thursday, Day Law and the Fire Fighter Recruits had their annual PT Challenge. Both groups ran an awesome race with a four second margin of victory going to the Firefighters. Congratulations! We are very proud of all of the Recruits and hope they continue to build relationships with their Public Safety brothers and sisters, all of our lives depend on it!

Adult Education
The Adult Education instructors are busy helping students get ready to take the TABE and/or take the GED by the end of the school year. In the last 2 weeks, we’ve had 17 students retest on the TABE and gained 21 hits! Two students made significant gains; one went from a 5.1M level to a 8.2D level in language, and the other went from 5.4M level to a 12.1 D level in math. Two AAAE students got their needed score for their CTE program. We have 11 more students signed up to take the GED by the end of this school year and several more going to the GED orientation next week. Whew!

This last Saturday, nearly 20 of our Adult Education faculty met to work on Career Pathways related projects. While this year has presented a number of challenging opportunities, one incredible good that has come out of it is a real sense of team-work and collaboration. In one of the pictures, teams of teachers were recording their findings from a session focused on mapping new contextualized curriculum to TABE requirements. Great job!

“Spiders, flowers, pigs, and friendship”…what’s the connection? An Adult ESOL field trip of course!

Field trips provide an excellent opportunity for students to use their developing language skills in a real-life situation. This year’s trip included the stage production of Charlotte’s Web at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater and a picnic at and tour of Leu Gardens.

Academic Affairs

Arts, AV Technology & Communication
In the Digital Design program, two more students have learned to work the vinyl cutter in the Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing classroom. It’s great to see students in these two programs work together. This week they nearly completed two huge signs for Lake County Schools’ Maintenance Department.

We’re building creativity! After Monday, instructor Kerrie Johnson will display their work in the case on the B-building wall. You’ll have to ask yourself, “Is it real or is it Photoshop?”

Caleb Jensen is building the United Way fiscal year end book and learning firsthand how things “really” work in the design world. He’s doing a great job!

Business, Management & Administration
Whew! Tax season is over and so is the Accounting Operations students’ commitment to tax preparation. There are four Accounting Operations students who are finishing up with OCP D and will be graduating in April or May.

Next week the Administrative Assistant program is hosting a luncheon on Wednesday for the Administrative Office Professionals here at Lake Tech in celebration of Office Professionals Day.

Law, Public Safety & Security
Corrections finished the first aid block this week and all Recruits are CPR certified. That will choke you up. Recruits will begin Firearms training Monday morning.

Day Law finished up driving this week and night law finished up the DUI block. Glad this week is finished up after all the drinking and driving going on!

Student Affairs

We are quickly drawing near to the end of the academic year and our Career Technical Education graduation ceremony. Currently, graduates and graduating students can begin ordering the cap and gown for the ceremony that will be held on Thursday, June 21st at Lake Receptions. Individual items, such as the memorial tassel, in the unit are also available for purchase. Some of the students may be wearing their official program uniform, but they may wish to purchase the memorial tassel. The deadline to order is May 11th.

Scott Fire Fighter Challenge a Big Success!

Hundreds of people watched America’s heroes in action during the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge on Saturday and Sunday. Fire fighters competed for times, points, and placement qualifying them for the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge US Nationals Competition to be held October 2012. According to Ron Williams, “The real idea behind the event is to promote the physical fitness of our firefighters and for the public to see what it takes to be firefighter.”

Also on Saturday & Sunday there was a free Kid’s Firefighter Combat Challenge that targeted children ages 4 to 11, and is a miniaturized version of its adult counterpart. It included a tunnel, hammer-slide, and fire hose drag. Griffith Photography took photographs. Kids were able to meet “Fire Pup”, experience Lake County Fire House, and participate in a variety of activities designed to increase their fire safety awareness.

The event was truly a community affair and was sponsored by Lake County Government and the City of Tavares. Several local dignitaries attended included US Congressman Dan Webster, Lake County Commissioners Leslie Campione and Jimmy Conner, Tavares Vice Mayor Bob Grenier, and Superintendent Susan Moxley. A complete list of all the sponsors can be found at the end of this update.

Academic Affairs

Law, Public Safety & Security
The Corrections Class is finishing the communications block this week and going right into the first aid block. Everyone is progressing very nicely and they are starting to come together as a team.

The Day Law Class finished up patrol and everyone passed the exam with very good scores. They are transitioning to vehicle operations this week and will be out at the range learning how to operate vehicles in emergency mode; always an exciting block for the recruits. They are really starting to gel as a unit and their marching is looking excellent. Anyone up at 6:45 am who would like to come by and see them put on a show is welcome.

The Night Law Class has just completed traffic stops training and everyone passed the exam with flying colors. They are starting the DUI block this week. These recruits are our senior class and they really show it. They are almost ready to leave our Academy and go out on their own. It has been exciting to watch them mature as a team these past six months.

We had quite a busy week at IPS, we were working very hard to spruce up the campus for the Fire Fighter Challenge. Both the Day Law and Corrections Recruits volunteered their lunch hour to help set up and move things around to ensure that all of our visitors this weekend have a great time. Kudos to the recruits for showing such initiative and hard work, they are truly team players.

Transportation & Logistics
Cornelius Graham, graduate of the Auto Body and Collision program, won $5,000 worth of tools from Craftsman through the Collision Foundation. A special thanks to Betty Jones and Dr. Lindamood for assisting Cornelius with his application.

Check out the VW that was painted by the students! It is going to work as a “billboard on wheels” for the front of the school!

Adult Education
Wow! Adult Education is getting a face-lift Career Pathways style. The walk from Building A to the GED classroom is now the “walk of fame”. As we all know, expectation is a determinant of success. We expect our Adult Education students to achieve so much more than a GED…and they will!

The mock-up phase of new Adult Education Career Pathways web portal is complete and the web-site is now being designed for a forthcoming live release. We are excited to see our students and prospective students use the site to explore, see, and support their career path.

Last, but not least, on June 12th many of our part-time Adult Education teachers will be coming on campus for a tour of the facility. The goal is to get them in “the know” about our programs, Lake Tech in general, and our value proposition to Adult Education students throughout Lake County.

Over the past few weeks and months, many of our students have made advancements not only in their academics, but also in their interpersonal communications with fellow classmates and their instructors. We are thrilled to see them come out of their shells and into their own. For many, this outreaching to fellow students in peer-building friendships is a huge step in trust and acceptance of new people and situations. Adult Education is not just about the academic improvements, it is about the personal growth of each student!

This week the students participated in a wonderful “hands-on” botany compare and contrast lesson with Ms. Netherton. They looked at many different types of leaves and listed the differences and the similarities between them. They even had poison ivy at one of their stations (sealed in a bag—of course)!

GED…It’s just the beginning!

Scholarship Opportunities for National Technical Honor Society Members
The Jon H. Poteat Scholarship application process is active through April 20th. To apply, your students need to log in on the NTHS website and follow the directions for application. It is basically a lottery, so it is not a lengthy process. Select “member resources” and then “scholarships.”

The 2012 Jon H. Poteat Scholarship on-line submission is available from January 1st. until midnight, April 20th. The application is simple and only takes a few minutes. Just log in as a member, click on scholarship application, confirm your name and email address, then submit! A confirmation email will be sent when the application is received.

Please note that final eligibility is contingent upon NTHS Advisor approval. Dr. Lindamood has to approve the scholarship applications, so tell your students to apply by noon on the 20th OR LET HER KNOW THAT THEY WILL BE ENTERING THEIR DATA AFTER NOON ON THE 20TH.
