Welcome to our new Board Member

The Lake Tech Board of Directors elected a new Board Member on April 30. Mr. Robert Chandler, Director of the Lake County Economic Development & Tourism Department, will be an outstanding addition to the Board. His expertise in economic and workforce development aligns perfectly with the mission of Lake Tech. Mr. Chandler earned his Master of Business Administration in Real Estate and Marketing from the University of Florida, and his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Davidson College. Chandler graduated from Leesburg High School and is native of Lake County.

Academic Affairs

Arts, AV Technology & Communication
The Digital Design students attended the great classes on resume preparation and transferring their specific skills information to the Workforce Central Florida website. It was an exciting day at Lake Tech’s first career fair, meeting and networking with potential employers.

Digital Design 2 students were greeted today with the latest Adobe Creative Suite 6 on their Macs. What a cool way to finish up their last five weeks – working with brand new tools!

IPad classes are becoming very popular at Lake Tech! Sonya Rosenglick taught a class this week to a group of community members who look like they are enjoying using this device.

Business Management & Administration
This was a busy and exciting week for our business classes!!

We started by recognizing Rose Williams for completing her “OCP” requirements. Our students also participated in the Career Fair. They made some useful connections which will help them in the future. In our Administrative Office Specialist program, Kelsey Tracy spent a morning working the front reception desk. There she answered the phones and helped visitors.

In addition to working on resumes, our students also worked on understanding Quick Books and creating agendas and press releases.

Health Science
Practical Nursing instructor Rachel Weaver used Socrative with her students from her iPad this week. She created five T/F questions and had her students answer them on their device. (Some used mobile phones, tablets, or laptops). The students could answer honestly as their names were not attached to the answer. When Ms. Weaver reviewed the responses, she realized that half the students chose true and the other half choose false for one particular question.

She was smart enough to realize that this was a “teaching opportunity”, so she directed the students in a debate about the question. The students who did not have an electronic device were the “gallery” and they had to make a decision as to which side made the stronger argument. In the end, they all agreed on the correct answer. Ms. Weaver shared, “This was the most fun day I have ever had in teaching.” What a great role model for using technology as a device in the classroom. The technology helped the students, but did not control the learning. Way to go, Weaver!!!

The Day and Evening Practical Nursing classes hosted a mixed welcome to the PM class and congratulations to the AM class on Friday. Pizza and cupcakes were served.

Law and Public Safety
The Corrections Recruits are currently in the firearms portion of their program and are progressing well. The Law Enforcement Recruits completed firearms also with flying colors and are moving forward into the Patrol portion of the program.

Several new classes will be available this fall in the Private Security Guard program area. Short courses include: Techniques & Principles of an Effective Supervisor; Human/Community Relations for Private Security; Effective Interviewing and Report Writing; and Critical Incident Preparedness will be offered beginning in August.

Manufacturing
One of the Applied Welding Technologies students, Robert Sherwood, received a letter of commendation from the City of Eustis for completing several fabrication projects for the City. These projects correlated to the competencies he was completing in the program.

Transportation, Distribution & Logistics
Lake Tech Automotive Service Technology students continue to earn their ASE certifications in the testing center.

Jose Padilla and Mark McKinney

Adult Education
In the Adult Education classroom students were given the opportunity to participate in a workshop about job application techniques. Students learned the role of an application, the importance of researching their employment history, how employers judge applications, and the logic of completing a master application. The students applied their knowledge during the Career Fair!

Important Information: Do you need your high school diploma and want to take the GED test? Did you know that if you’ve already started the test but haven’t finished, your scores expire at the end of 2013? The new GED test comes out in January 2014.

The summer term begins July 1st for GED classes to be held at the Eustis main campus, as well as ESOL and GED classes at the Mascotte South Campus. The fall term begins August 19th and the cost is only $30 per term for Florida residents.

After the Career Fair on Wednesday, Latarsha from Publix was invited to the ESOL classes to provide additional information about careers at Publix. The students were very interested in learning about how to apply for a job at Publix. Afterwards, she enjoyed lunch with the ESOL instructors.

Academic Affairs

Arts, AV Technology & Communication
What a week! Digital Design 2 student Steven Draper made us very proud at the SkillsUSA state contest by bringing home the gold medal in Advertising Design. Now we’ll be working hard to raise money to send him to Kansas City for Nationals where he will represent the entire state of Florida in the same contest.

Seven students were nominated for National Technical Honor Society! That’s a great accomplishment considering the rigorous qualifications.

Business Management & Administration
This was a week of ups and downs for our Business Programs.

The up part of our week began with several of our students going on job interviews. We are still waiting to hear the results.

Ms. Wendi Price, an Administrative Office Specialist student, developed a presentation of how to prepare for an interview. It was based on her recent experiences, class information, and the advice from the different speakers we have had in class. She delivered the presentation to the class. The students found it very informative and timely. A very lively discussion followed.

Speaking of jobs, Mr. Able Barajas, an Accounting Operations student, just completed his job shadowing requirement at Travers Legal Firm. On his return, he described the process and his experiences to the class. He found it very informative and beneficial.

These interviews and presentations, as well as the upcoming Career Fair, have almost everyone updating or creating a resume.

In addition to working on resumes, our students also worked on creating an itinerary for a business trip including scheduling rooms and auto rentals. They also worked on advanced methods for extracting data from an Excel spreadsheet.

Several of the Administrative Office Specialist students spent productive time with Ms. Lana Taylor who showed them how to work the many features of a copier and the fax machine. She also showed them how to fix a paper jam!

The down side of this week was it marked the completion of Mr. Able Barajas’ class requirements. He is shown surrounded by his classmates. They toasted him with Able’ favorite treat—McDonald’s apple pies. Good luck, Able!

What a week!!

Health Science
We are very proud to announce that we now have am official simulation lab located in the EMS Building! This lab, designed by EMS Coordinator Layne Hendrickson and the EMS faculty, will be an incredible addition to the training offered not only in EMS but by all of our healthcare programs. Kudos to Bob Zehner for working his magic on the video technology involved.

Saturday, April 20th was Trauma Day for the EMT students. This day is the high spot of the Trauma module. Students participated in simulated trauma scenarios, assessing, treating, stabilizing, and moving “patients” involved in anything from falls, vehicle accidents, industrial incidents, to altercations.

Student teams were formed and the teams competed in timed events such as splinting, patient packaging, and bandaging. Congratulations to the winning team; William Reed, Adam Paynter, Joey Woods, Michael Edwards, and Tristan Upthagrove.

The Paramedic students had a busy week as they completed two separate two-day courses – the American Heart Association’s Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course and the Pediatric Life Support (PALS) course. Students are now busy preparing for their final written and practical test out. Graduation is May 15!

Nursing students help with sports physicals at the Villages High School. This event is held every year sponsored by a local orthopedic group. They assisted in doing histories, blood pressure & pulse readings, heights & weights, and body fat measurement. Some even had the opportunity to work directly with the doctors who were doing the physical exams. It was a great day!

Law and Public Safety
The Corrections Recruits completed their Defensive Tactics block of training with flying colors and they are now moving forward into the firearms block of training. The Law Enforcement Recruits completed firearms also with flying colors. We are proud of both Recruit Classes.

The Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Firefighter Recruits volunteered last weekend at Leesburg Bike Fest and all of them that participated made Lake Tech very proud. Each morning at briefing Lt. Chris DeLibro was told by the command staff how sharp and professional the Recruits looked and performed. The Command staff and the Leesburg Partnership were very, very appreciative of all the Recruits.

If you missed the Firefighters Competition on April 13, then you missed a great event. Those guys and gals are competitive and in great shape. Check out the photo-movie from the event. http://youtu.be/5v3_S7Nts3g

You may also see photographs from the event by going to: www.partypics.com and using the password: Lake. Once there, select the event from the list of Lake Tech events.

Transportation, Distribution & Logistics
The Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing students recently completed a unit on Entrepreneurship. On Thursday, bank officers from Insight Credit Union in Eustis presented a seminar for the students on how to obtain loans, write business plans, and make a good impression in order to get an auto body business up and running!

Two students from the Auto Collision Repair & Refinishing program won scholarships this week. Shawn Durante won a $1000 scholarship and Keith Totten won a $2500 through the Collision Foundation and Sterling Auto Body. In addition, both students were awarded a 3M Military “Hire our Heroes” Tool grant. They will be allowed to choose $2500 worth of tools to help them get started in their careers.

Students in the Medium & Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician (Diesel) program are building a diesel engine to go into a jeep! When Representative Dan Webster was on campus last week, he enjoyed talking to the students and seeing their work!

Lake Tech Automotive Service Technology students are now able to earn their ASE certifications in the testing center. Brandon Rose is the first student to earn his Engine Repair certification. Congratulations!

Adult Education
In the Adult Education classroom, many students scored high on their TABE tests this week! This has resulted in CTE students back in their classes full-time, future CTE students ready for next year’s classes, and students ready to take the GED test.

After intensive study of our oldest American city, the ESOL students enjoyed a wonderful field trip to St. Augustine. They took a guided tour of the Castillo de Marcos in which students practiced their listening and speaking English skills. Before a picnic lunch, the class took an educational trolley tour through the historic district!

For the last week and a half, he and fellow Digital Design 2 student Josh Wardingly have collaborated to design and prepare the layout for United Way’s annual report – an 8-page, full-color booklet that will be commercially printed by Ford Press. Together, with their instructor, they have been invited as special guests to the United Way annual meeting and luncheon at Lake Receptions. Annual reports are one of the highest-valued printed projects that any company has designed, so we are extremely honored for our students to be considered for such a lofty endeavor. Students will receive special recognition and three final printed copies for their portfolios.

Student Alex Hulbert recently began an internship for Husebo Advertising and will have his name in the masthead for the Florida Gulf Coast Healthy Living magazine as a graphic designer. This is the epitome of recognition for any graphic designer creating layouts and ads for magazines – a highly-sought position! Alex has also created a beautiful promotional design for Vac-Tron. The owners liked it so much that they are using it on their web page!

Digital Design 1 students began job shadowing and have had a great time visiting That! Company, Sign Crafters, Ford Press, Sharf Signs, and Xlnt Design. Getting a “behind-the-scenes” view of professional graphic designers has sparked new passions and interests!

Business Management & Administration
This was a very busy and emotional week for our Business Classes.

Last Wednesday, the members of the Administrative Office Specialist (AOS) class hosted a special event for the Office Professionals at Lake Tech. It included a brunch in the Child Care classroom. Many of Lake Tech’s administration support team members took the opportunity to stop in and enjoy a variety of foods and refreshments, which included fruit, a meat tray, and tasty desserts, including a cake. In addition, they had the opportunity to talk with our AOS students and share experiences and advice. Later that afternoon the AOS students visited the office professionals and delivered thank you cards, flowers, and balloons. It was a wonderful experience for our class. The project did not end at the end there. The next day the AOS group had a meeting to review the project, what went right, what we can improve, and identify new ideas for next year. These were then written down and will be part of next year’s planning. Members of our AOS team include Stephanie Armstrong, Julie Brown, Bradley Bryant, Autumn Diggers, Jennifer Green, Cera Howard, Wendi Price, Lashon Robinson, Kelsey Tracy, and Joyce Williams. Good job TEAM!

In our classes we learned about basic accounting operations and creating mail merge procedures.

What a week!!

Digital Design hosted Mr. Izaak Hale, a guest speaker from That! Company, on Friday. He expressed the need for great designers, not only in his company, but throughout Lake County. Our students are now even more excited about polishing their design and software skills in order to qualify! Ms. Johnson challenged Mr. Hale to try his own skills at earning a certification in Adobe Illustrator, since we are an official testing center.

Instructor Kerrie Johnson earned her second industry certification – this time in Adobe Illustrator. Congrats Kerrie!

Business Management & Administration
The Scott Combat Firefighter Challenge was a big success. Fire Fighters from as far away as Canada spent the day at the Lake Tech Fire Academy participating in the toughest 2 minutes in sports! Russell Darst opened with the singing of the National Anthem. A special thanks to Tavares Fire Chief Richard Keith and Lake County Fire Chief John Jolliff for being part of the opening ceremonies.

The Law Enforcement Recruits completed the dart firing stun gun (Taser) portion of their training this week and were happily joined by the Paramedic students from the main campus for some quality hands on training. I believe the majority of the recruits were shocked to learn how powerful the Taser can be when used properly.

Combat Fire Fighter Challenge – April 13, 2013
1st Annual Lake Tech Career Fair – May 8
Leadership Lake to visit Lake Tech – May 8

Academic Affairs

Arts, AV Technology & Communication
What a proud week we celebrate as two Digital Design students and the instructor earned Adobe certifications:

Mark Thibodeau earned his Adobe Certified Associate in Dreamweaver CS5
Yasmine Crespo earned her Adobe Certified Associate in Photoshop CS4
Ms. Johnson earned her Adobe Certified Associate in InDesign CS5

With great books, current software and supplemental video training, plus lots of practice, ALL Lake Tech Digital Design students are planning to earn their Adobe certification!

Business, Management & Administration
Our first week back from the spring break was a very busy and productive one. It started with a very good prank being played by the students on the instructor on April’s Fools Day. It was not a joke, however, when our class recognized Abel Barajas as our Student of the Month for March.

Our students continue to volunteer their time in helping Lake County residents enter and file their income taxes as part of the United Way’s VITA program. There is only one more week left in this program.

We welcomed Ms. Susan Krug, Senior Recruiter, from Florida Hospital – Waterman. She spoke to our Business classes (Administrative Office Specialist, Accounting Operations and Digital Design) about career opportunities in the medical field. She also discussed how to complete an application and a resume. Then she discussed interview tips as well as what to do and what not to do. She answered many questions about all phases of a job search.

In our classes we are working with machine transcriptions using an iPad as a source, developing reports, and importing data into an ACCESS data base.

On Friday, our classroom took on an ORANGE glow as a table full of Syracuse University (SU) memorabilia, oranges and SU treats greeted both students and guests. Syracuse is where instructor Chuck Durante earned his MBA. GO SU!

Health Science

“911 Operator. What is Your Emergency?”

On Wednesday, the Medical Assisting and Paramedic programs at Lake Tech joined forces to experience a mock environmental exposure event. The exposure event took place in the simulated doctor’s office in the Medical Assisting department, located on the Main Campus. Medical assisting and paramedic students role-played as they met the objectives required of both programs. The exercise consisted of students contributing their expertise in competencies to facilitate order and organization, execute an evacuation plan, triage patients and assist in first aide response.

The environmental event was a chemical spill that occurred in a physician’s office. Some of the students acted as patients, while others were part of the staff, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). In addition, students portrayed a news anchor, an interpreter, and patients arriving for intended appointments. As the scenario played out, instructors evaluated the students while organized chaos ensued. Expectations of the scenario was initiating the environmental exposure plan, placing the 911 call, evacuating patients in various stages of patient care, and triaging appropriately. Collaboration is a valuable tool that teachers from different programs can utilize for the compliance of the Florida Department of Education Framework objectives.

Law, Public Safety & Security
Lake Technical Center’s Fire Academy, in partnership with Lake County and the City of Tavares, proudly announces its fourth annual Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge, April 13, 2013. The event is free to the public. Come watch America’s heroes in action! Opening Ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m., and the competitions are immediately following. According to Ron Williams, Lake Tech Fire Academy Director, “The real idea behind the event is to promote the physical fitness of our firefighters and for the public to see what it takes to be firefighter.”

On Saturday, there will be a free Kid’s Firefighter Combat Challenge that targets youths, ages 4 to 11, and is a miniaturized version of its adult counterpart. The Kid’s Challenge runs from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and includes a tunnel, hammer-slide, and fire hose drag. This is an exciting adventure for any child who wants to put on fire gear and squirt a real fire hose!
