The City of Oviedo is currently hiring for Firefighter/EMT. This position requires FireTEAM testing through the National Testing Network (NTN) and a valid CPAT. All testing must be completed by May 30, 2016.

Salary Information: $13.06 – $20.60 Hourly, $38,018.03 – $59,990.19 Annually

Work Objective: Performs intermediate protective service work in fire suppression and providing emergency medical care to sick and injured patients; does related work as required. Work is performed under emergency conditions and involves an element of personal danger. Work is performed under regular supervision of a Fire Officer.

Department Overview: The Oviedo Fire Department is an active department that participates in numerous community based functions, provides continual training opportunities, as well as responds to over 4,000 calls per year. The department is currently run out of 3 stations which house 3 Engines, 2 Rescues, 1 Battalion Chief, and other specialty equipment on an as needed basis. Our Engines and Rescues provide advanced life support services, as well as transport services to those we treat. This ensures the best possible care for the citizens we serve.

The City of Oviedo participates in an automatic aid program with the Seminole County and neighboring fire service agencies.

The Oviedo Fire Department is an ISO class 2 department and strives hard to maintain our excellent rating from customer surveys, as well as zero deficiency from State compliance inspections.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience and training in fire suppression and emergency medical care.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics as applied to fire suppression.
  • Ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques, and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression.
  • General knowledge of the principles of anatomy, physiology and chemistry in relation to the respiratory and circulatory systems.
  • General knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and automobile extraction and transportation.
  • General knowledge of the street system and geography of the City.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports; physical endurance and agility.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Florida driver license
  • Current Florida EMT certificate
  • Current State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance
  • Must meet and maintain all requirements for position as established by the City and the State of Florida.

Physical Requirements: Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Work requires considerable physical activity including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling; worker must be able to lift and carry dead weight of at least 100 pounds. Position requires visual acuity sufficient to safely operate fire equipment and to affect search and rescue operations and hearing sufficient to accurately perceive information at spoken word levels; manual dexterity is required for grasping and operating equipment.

Environmental Requirements: Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold; during firefighting activities worker is subject to heavy smoke, fumes and gasses; the worker is required to wear and work in a respirator.
