GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsible providing pre-hospital emergency medical care and for preventing and extinguishing fires.

Department Information: Hernando County Fire Rescue covers approximately 450 square miles. In 2015, the department handled just short of 30,000 incidents. The department handles all types of emergencies ranging from basic medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, structure fires and wildland fires. The department transports patients from scene to the hospitals additionally we handle inter-facility transports.

County Information: Hernando County stretches 37 miles east to west, and 18 miles north to south for a total of 506 square miles.

In 2001, the Turnpike District of the Florida Department of Transportation opened 42 miles of the Suncoast Parkway connecting northern Hernando County with the Tampa International Airport and Westshore District of Tampa. The north-south tollway translates to less than 30 minutes to Tampa for many Spring Hill residents.

Hernando County is also well connected by Interstate 75 and US 301 in the east, US 41 and US 98 in the central part of the County, and US 19 in western Hernando County. Other Florida cities lying within an hour’s drive of the County are Lakeland, Ocala, and Orlando. The County is served by the local Hernando County Airport and Tampa International Airport, 45 miles to the south.

  • Valid FLORIDA State Driver’s License: Yes
  • Vision: Good near and distant vision ( with or without correction)
  • College: No
  • Academy Certification: Yes
  • Prior Experience: No

Necessary Certifications: Florida State Paramedic, Florida State Firefighter, and Current BLS Certification Current ACLS Certification (Firefighter/Paramedic)

Residency Requirements: Permanent residence must be established within 50 miles of the nearest Hernando County Fire Station within (6) months of employment.

Schooling Prior and Post Hiring:
Candidates must have current State of Florida Paramedic Certification and pass paramedic provisional after employment. In addition, all candidates shall finish a three year apprentice program.
